And The Oscar Goes To . . . Matilda?

by Asher Ricard

After much discussion and legalities, the Academy Awards has finally reached a conclusion as to what should happen if Heath Ledger was to win the Oscar this weekend.

Ledger's daughter, Matilda Rose, has been named the rightful owner of the statuette. However, as always, there is a catch.

Matilda will not be the legal owner until she turns 18. In past situations such as these, a spouse or oldest child is awarded the Oscar. In Ledger's case, it meant it would fall to Matilda.

In these situations, however, the heir has to sign a contract that agrees to take ownership and not resell the statue without first offering to sell it back to the academy for $1. In this case, being three years old, Matilda can not legally sign the contract.

Therefore, the Academy agreed to let Michelle Williams, actress and Matilda's mom, to hold the statue until her 18th birthday. At that time, Matilda will have the option of signing the contract or allowing the statue to go back to the Academy.

No word yet on who will accept the award as eager fans wait to find out. In the past when awards were given after a death, it has gone to a spouse, oldest child, family member or a close friend actor.

I personally think it would be very interesting to have Matilda as part of the show. I could even envision Ledger's father or Williams accepting the award along side the daughter of the famous actor.

I am looking forward to this year's show along with the rest of the world because of this very storyline. America and the world were saddened by Ledger's untimely death because of an overdose on prescription drugs.

The story dominated newspapers and the internet for months as fans searched for answers. It is my hope that this academy awards show provides closure on a life that will be greatly missed.
