The Blueman Group, a mix of acoustic genius, visual mayhem and good old-fashioned slapstick comedy are touring the UK presently (May 2009).
I went to see them at the weekend and felt a little shortchanged.
The acoustics were great, the visual effects were stunning and fun but I could have done without the enduring slapstick comedy and lengthy non-musical gaps while the bluemen interacted with the audience.
Regrettably, I’d seen most of the visual effects on youtube before the show, so they came as no great surprise. It was a little like having already seen the end of a movie when you go to see it at the cinema. The wow factor had been compromised.
The audience was a mix of young and old and as I noted before the acoustics were phenomenal. They did have singers (male and female) which they would have done better to manage without as neither were particularly good, though the male voice was easier on the ears while the woman’s was a tad screechy.
Overall I’d rate the show 7/10 and while they are talented, and they put on a great show, it was slow moving and there were too many quiet non musical patches given it is a concert.
Would I go to see the blueman group again? Probably not.
