Can Long Distance Relationships Work?

A friend of mine maintained a long distance relationship for nearly 8 yrs. She lived in one country, he in another, meeting up for holidays and such. They even maintained this long distance relationship after they were married, so it certainly worked.
That is until they stopped living apart and finally moved in together. Two years later they were divorced.
It does make one wonder how much relevance the distance between them played re them being together so long in the first place. Many couples may find that a long distance relationship arrangement is tough and while it did have it's difficulties it clearly worked or it would not have endured for so long.
Myself, I had a long distance relationship for several months before making the decision to be nearer to my boyfriend. We had decided if the relationship was to continue one of us had to move. I made that move. It was a huge decision and involved a lot of upheaval.
Initially, the move did not work well. We struggled to adjust to our new situation and close proximity and realizing the honey moon period was over and neither of us were quite the person that the other thought they were.
But more time passed, and we adjusted and were then together for 8yrs.
Again, one has to wonder how much influence the long distance between us played on the outcome and if we'd have been together for 8yrs had we not had to commit to each other so soon.
I expect armed forces spouses know only too well what it means being in long distance relationships when their partners can be gone for many months at a time. The strain on both parties must be considerable. Then there is the adjustment period each has to make when the absent one returns home.
The wife may have got used to her own space and doing things her way in her own time. Then when her husband comes home, it's into his routine she has to fit. Changes of schedules, etc. Though of course there are likely benefits. Love renewed, and perhaps the embers of romance burning for longer.
Have you been in a long distance relationship, if so what might you change?
