Do You Sleep In The Same Bed As Your Spouse?

by Beth Kade(7)

Recently, I heard a newlywed remark that she does not sleep in the same bed as her husband. She said she would never get any sleep because of his snoring.

I have to admit, I was appalled. How can they expect their marriage to last if they do not even share the same bed, I thought.

I am a romantic and my most favorite part of being married is waking up in the arms of my husband or just near him so this concept is odd to me.

The BBC is reporting that a sleep specialist at a British Science Festival revealed that sharing a bed as a couple is "bad for your health."

"One study found that, on average, couples suffered 50% more sleep disturbances if they shared a bed," the BBC reports.

It is interesting to me because the article even goes farther to say that historically, couples didn't share beds. It was during the Industrial revolution that space became an issue that couples began to share beds.

Poor sleep has been linked to depression, stress, car accidents, divorces, heart disease and strokes as well as other complications.

I will admit there have been nights. You know the ones where you are arguing and you finally decide to sleep in a different room. I feel guilty to say that some of those nights I have slept the hardest. Maybe there is something to this new research.

Is it worth a lifetime of being condemned to the couch? No, I still do not think I could give up the romantic notion of couples in the same bed.

What about you? Do you sleep in separate rooms? If it meant being healthy, would you? Leave your thoughts in the comment section below.

Hi Beth, I think it's far more important to have a good nights sleep, given that sleep deprivation can cause serious emotional and physical problems.

Most people kiss goodnight, cuddle a little (perhaps more) then roll over and sleep on own side of the bed. Thus sleeping in seperate beds or rooms isn't that big of a deal as you can still kiss, cuddle and enjoy sex before you settle off to sleep in whatever bed.

A good nights sleep is very important.

Meanwhile many couples can't sleep in the same house let alone bed. Consider military men and women and so on.

Great article, very thought provoking! Welcome to IcePop.
