Starcraft 2 mining is the main way that you get this resource in the early game. All of your base units will cost only minerals so it’s great to start collecting it right away. Anything that you do early on will require minerals, and it’s necessary for you to gather it.
How Starcraft 2 Mining Works - How to Collect It
There are certain units that each race has that can collect resources. These units are the only ones of the race that can collect minerals or gas (with the exception of the Mule, who the Terran can create.)
For the Protoss the Probe is the harvester that can do Starcraft 2 mining and if you’re the Zerg your Drone is the harvesing unit. As the Terran you have SCV’s or the Mule, which is an advanced harvester that you can get from your command center.

When you’re creating harvesters you can set their rally point to be on the minerals that you wanted to be mined, so that they automatically do it. This way you won’t have to manually set each drone, probe, or SCV to mine it themselves.

As you learn to play more and more you’re going to see that there are a lot of minerals scattered throughout the map. You can expand by building your base centers and continue to mine more and more which will give you a much better economy. Generally if you control the map by mining everywhere you will have a serious edge to winning the game, but be careful because without a balanced army you can easily be taken over.
