The Hand-Sewing Revolution! cries

I love how this has to be filed under "women's issues" because there's no other relevant topic descriptor. Sigh.

I love to sew. I have a pile of projects awaiting adequate patterns/fabric/time/creative input. I took my first paid sewing job the other day and while it was unnervingly 'simple', I managed to break my machine. And it's all sewing's fault.

In short,

Sewing-loving flatmate moves out and doesn't want to haul a bunch of unused stuff. Sewing loving flatmate (SLF) has industrial sewing machine that she does not use. SLF includes about 20 bobbins (machine part with thread on, to sit in the machine) from industrial sewing machine. Zoe uses bobbins happily but tries to use domestic sewing machine to re-wind them. Then it gets messy.

Now, the bobbin winder on a sewing machine is OUTSIDE of the machinery itself. So, when the bobbin got caught on the winder and I couldn't pull it off, this was not *really* a big deal. I'd just have to hand-wind the bobbin until I got it sorted. But instead, I asked The Man to help, who pulled the bobbin off with such force that the entire winder came off with it. No fear, it was not a vital part of machinery- sewing machine still works.

Sewing machine does not work when The Man unscrews all accessible screws on the outside of the machine, realises the machine still won't open for him to re-insert bobbin winder stick thing, and tried to re-screw all screws and realises some had bolts on the back. My motor is now roving loose on the inside of my sewing machine, as is the plug access-bit, as is the stitch-changer bit.

And, with today's technology and society, it will cost me more to get a shop that knows how to re-assemble my poor machine, than it will to buy a newer, better machine.
