Ferrets As Pets - All You Need To Know About Keeping Ferrets As Pets.

by Max Power(1)

Keeping ferrets as pets can be a fun and rewarding experience but there are certain things you need to know before going out and buying your first ferret, or if you already have one, things you need to be aware of to improve the relationship between yourself and your pet.

Here are five must-knows about keeping ferrets as pets;

1) Ferrets, like all other pets, can be well trained and are suited to the home environment They are the domesticated version of the wild pole cat and will live up to 10 years. The way a ferret will behave reflects the living conditions and way it has been taught.

2) When keeping ferrets as pets they will need to same things other pets do such as clean drinking water, fresh food (in the form of raw meat), space to play, a latrine (which will be emptied twice a day), and somewhere to sleep (a cage is optional for indoor use).

3) Ferrets are naturally social creatures so wherever possible it is better to keep two or more ferrets as pets rather than one. They are also very playful pets and need a lot of stimulation by way of walking on a harness, or playing through various toys, tubes and boxes you can put out for them. You may also decide to make your animals work and use them for ferreting to catch their own meat.

4) To keep the smell of ferrets down the males in particular need to be neutered. For male ferrets if they aren't they will smell strongly and be aggressive to other male ferrets. It also stops and unwanted baby ferrets appearing if you have two of each sex.

5) To keep your ferret healthy you will want to inspect them for fleas or ticks and keep them in a steady temperature since they may get heat stroke or too cold in damp and wet conditions. Keeping your ferrets in doors will greatly reduce this problem but increase the risk of fleas by being outside.

So, that was a quick run down on my advice for keeping ferrets as pets.
