Tips on Selecting A Second Hand Car

by Stella Manson(2)

Buying a second hand car is a great way to get a quality vehicle without paying a fortune for it. Considering the fact that new cars begin to lose value as soon as they are driven off of the dealer's lot, you're much better off purchasing a used car. While you can find a lot of great deals by opting for a second hand car, it's important that you understand several key tips about what you should look for in this type of car, as well is what you should make sure you avoid.

The first tip for finding a quality used car is to look for one that is only a couple of years old. In addition to the obvious reason of this type of used car having less wear and tear, one big advantage of choosing this type of vehicle is that it may still be protected by its original warranty. If you aren't having much luck finding any used vehicles that are still protected by their original warranty, another option is to find a dealer that offers an attractive warranty for the car that you purchase. Having either type of warranty will help you save a lot of money if you encounter a serious problem with your car after purchasing it.

As you're starting to look at second hand cars, before you begin considering any specific cars, you want to make sure that there aren't any widespread problems with the types of cars you're considering. It's important to research this information because even if you encounter a specific used car that is in great shape, if there have been a lot of reports about the model encountering problems or having defects, you want to stay away from it. Once you know what models you should avoid, you can begin focusing on specific vehicles. If you find one that is in good shape and has an attractive price, it's important not to let your excitement allow you to make a rushed decision. Before seriously considering any vehicle, you should obtain a comprehensive history report about it. This can normally be done by obtaining the car's VIN and then paying a small fee to obtain this report from an official agency. While it does cost a bit of money to get this report, it can alert you to any problems that indicate this isn't as good of a deal as you initially thought.

If you think you've narrowed down your options to the perfect vehicle and nothing worrisome showed up on its report, before you start signing any papers, you should have the vehicle inspected by an independent mechanic. Like the comprehensive history report, having the second hand car you are thinking about purchasing inspected won't cost you much money at all. And because the mechanic will be able to tell you exactly what kind of shape the car is in, the information you obtain from this inspection is invaluable. If the mechanic reports that everything is good, then you can finalize the deal to become the proud new owner of a quality second hand car.
