Muscular development - While there no doubting the fact that when you ride a horse, it is the horse that will do the majority of the hard work, the rider will be required to develop a certain level of muscular strength for holding onto the horse while going over jumps and for basic horsemanship such as steering and controlling the horse. An hour riding a horse can leave a rider feeling like they have just done a good session in the gym with legs, arms and stomach muscles feeling like they have just gone through a very tough workout.
Aerobic capacity - while hacking out on a horse might not be the first thing that pops into your head when you think about good activities that will get your heart pumping, it is actually very aerobic. The constant efforts while out of the saddle and the pumping of the arms and legs really cause the heart rate to raise.
