What's So Special About You?

by Kim Schuld
KMS Coaching

It's been popping up a lot lately - "Life coaches are a dime a dozen, so what's so special about you?"

There's a difference between the bravado of saying "Of course I am unique and special," and the courage to really know deep in your soul that you are special. That kind of "knowing" requires ACTION. Once you touch it, once it is exposed to air and light, it will demand attention whether you have moments of doubt or not. And letting it come out and be seen can be scary and exhilarating.

So the people who asked me, "What's so special about you?" this past week aredo the ones who do it with a little smile. They know that I've touched that place and their goal was to get me to articulate it in 60 seconds or less. Now that's a real challenge for me! I love to talk and explain and tell stories so it can take me a while to get to the vulnerable part of me that you might connect with or find interesting. Now I was being challenged to throw that out first and let people see it. I almost felt like I was being told to walk into a room of strangers and rip my clothes off!

However, the exercise is a good one for all of us. If you only had 60 seconds to tell a perfect stranger what's so special about you, would you be ready?

First, do you really comprehend how unique you are? I mean, there a 3 billion people on this planet and not one of them is exactly like you. Your body is an engineering marvel that still mystifies doctors and scientists even though we've been studying it since before the birth of Christ. No one is like you. No one thinks just like you do, no one feels just like you do and no one loves the way you do.

Second, do you know your gifts? Some of us have obvious talents - singers, musicians, artists, dancers come to mind. But your gift is whatever it is that you are good at and feel good when you do it. For one person, the gift of numbers makes them a great accountant. For another, the gift of seeing patterns and color makes them great at crafting. Some people just have the gift of listening. You have gifts to offer!

Third, what are your experiences? Where you've lived, what you've done, who you've seen all add up to you being different than me, and special because of it. You don't have to have a passport full of stamps to have experiences. While one person has traveled the globe, another has rescued 72 stray dogs last year alone.

Start to write down your answers to the question: What's so special about you? I'll bet you'll have a hard time putting down the pen once you really let yourself buy into it.
