It's All In the Preparation

There is a common perception that a successful artist can walk up to a canvas and create an excellent work instantly from scratch. Even the great Masters thrashed out ideas in notebooks before eventually putting brush to canvas. Many highly regarded artists acknowledge their greatest achievements are the result of mindful preparation and consideration of technique, materials and overall concept, among many other factors. Often an excellent artwork is possibly the second or third version of a concept that needed further development.
Planning, experimenting and preparing materials are essential parts of many successful artists' practice. For me the first issue is to think about the project. IDEA, OBJECTIVES, CHOICES, INTENT.
When preparing to start an artwork you have to consider your palette. Do you adjust your palette, is your palette standard that you build up or scale down ordo you work with a limited palette?
I generally use the same palette for most of my work. I have found myself using less colours as time goes by as this gives me more control, but the available mixtures is immense.
Lighting quality, whether in the studio or outdoors, impacts the ambiance of every artwork. Consider what factors influence you lighting choices. I am a lover of north light or natural light both as a source for my subject and on my work. I adjust my schedule throughout the year to take maximum advantage of natural light in my studio. I will occasionally work with supplemental light in my studio in the evenings but to a degree since subtle colour can be greatly affected.
Acknowledging that every artist's practice is somewhat unique, there is certainly much to be learned from reading about and observing others' techniques.
