After Fetching $1.4 Million At Auction, Banksy Painting Shock Art World By Promptly ‘Self-Destructing’
Auction houses often feel stuffy and pretentious. But, Sotheby’s in London got a little deflated over a sought-after art piece from Banksy.
A Stun Beyond Sticker Shock
Both staff and onlookers were stunned after the familiar image of a girl reaching for a red balloon fetched the final bid of $1.4 million dollars. Jaws were dropping, not because of the price tag, but because of what happened a few moments after bidding came to an end.
The artwork began to automatically self-destruct while onlookers looked helplessly and gasped.
Pranks Get Paid
Graffiti artist Banksy has been known for his playfulness in his artwork, and this latest stunt definitely didn’t disappoint. Banksy’s Instagram page got over a million likes, in response to a video uploaded of the artwork being shredded at Sotheby’s.
It is curious how no one ever knew there was a shredder cleverly hidden inside the artist’s frame at the bottom. And to top things off, the artwork may still be worth even more money after being reduced to strips.
Banksy’s Next Move
The artist known as Banksy has eluded everyone, maintaining an anonymous identity which adds to his artwork’s mystique and intrigue. However, no amount of money can put a stop to an artist and their work being subversive and thought-provoking.
Banksy had the foresight to install a shredder at the bottom of his framed artwork, in case it would eventually end up on the auction block. The “Girl With Red Balloon” was meant to pop as soon as the hammer fell.
After sending shockwaves through the art collector world, no one knows what Banksy might do next. Since people with money are so eager to capitalize on underground art, there’s more likely to be similar stunts in the future.
