Here’s What Happens To Your Body When You Start Skipping Exercise
We all know the benefits of a healthy diet and regular exercise, but do you know what happens to your body when you don’t exercise? Read on to find out five major things that can happen when you just can’t find the motivation to work out. They might just give you the kick in the pants you need.
When you exercise, your muscles are damaged by micro-tears in the fibers. As the muscles repair themselves, they fuse the muscles fibers back together to form new protein strands that build on the old ones. If you don’t work your muscles to micro-tear and grow, you lose those muscles to atrophy. Just one week of bed rest can reduce your muscle strength by 30 percent!
During exercise, your muscles are stretched against your bones, promoting growth. This tension, created by pulling muscle over bone, triggers the bone to increase its density. Lack of exercise does the exact opposite. No tension, no growth. As you age, the density in our bones decreases naturally and, if you don’t exercise, you are speeding up the process, which may lead to osteoporosis.
Stress is a fact of life and it can wreak havoc on your body and your mind if you leave it unchecked. Exercising causes your brain to release endorphins, which are natural pain relievers. These endorphins relieve your stress and anxiety and make you feel good. So, ramp up that exercise and let your endorphins flow!
When you’re not exercising, you keep all the stress from your day and your body keeps its energy because it has nowhere to go. Exercise 5 to 6 hours before bedtime and you’ll not only release endorphins, but your body will have just started to cool down, making it easier to rest. These two combined will help you get a good night’s sleep. Without that, bedtime just may be a struggle.
Lack of aerobic exercise weakens your immune system, opening you up to more colds and flu. With a weakened immune system, your body has a difficult time fighting off those viruses. You can’t prevent all viruses by working out, but at least give your body a fighting chance. Do yourself and your immune system a favor and get to the gym!
