Boxing Champion Offers Belt to Opponent to Bring Peace Between Two Countries

Boxing, in many ways, can be a very entertaining sport. Aside from that, it can also be used as a medium to send a message of peace. This chivalrous act was displayed by Indian boxer Vijender Singh.

In August 5 2017, Singh and Zulpikar Maimaitiali met inside the ring at the Natinal Sports Club in Mumbai, India. On the line were both their reputation and championship belts. Singh was the WBO Asia-Pacific Super Middleweight champion while Maimaitiali was the WBO Oriental Super Middleweight champion.

After 10 rounds of trading and enduring punches, India’s Singh immerged as the victor while China’s Maimaitiali had to settle with his loss. Judges scored the fight with a 96-93, 95-94 and 95-94 in favor of the Indian boxer.

At the height of his excitement from winning the fight, Singh went outside the boxing ring to celebrate with Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan and other well-known personalities. They hugged each other in celebration of the boxer’s recent win.

Afterwards, Singh went back inside the ring and took the mic to speak. He said: “I don’t want this title. I will give it back to Maimaitiali. I don’t want tension on the border. It’s a message of peace. That’s important.”

This gesture of peace expressed by Singh was lauded by the people on social media and has inspired a lot of people garnering thousands of likes and shares.

It has been a few weeks since tension between China and India has been building up over territorial claims. A contested region in the Himalayas where China, Bhutan and India meet is said to have been the cause of the rising tension between the two countries.
