Cancer Survivors Reunited After 25 Years, And Fell In Love
For many, hearing you have cancer is devastating news. You have to prepare for a long and exhausting fight— one that might not end the way you hope. But despite the pain and suffering associated with the disease, there could be a light at the end of the tunnel. Just ask Joel and Lindsey Alsup.
When Joel and Lindsey were just 12 and 13 years old, they were battling cancer at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Lindsey was suffering from acute lymphoblastic leukemia and Joel had osteosarcoma, resulting in having his arm amputated. But despite this, the two became close friends at the hospital.
Her Childhood Crush
Lindsey remembered having a crush on Joel when they were youths. But after they were declared cancer free and sent home, neither of them saw each other ever again. Perhaps it took a miracle for Lindsey to return to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital 25 years later, where she bumped into Joel, who now serves as the hospital’s information and technology coordinator. Fate, perhaps?
“Afraid To Talk To Her”
Joel was thrilled to see his old friend again. He admitted he thought she was beautiful when they were cancer patients. “I was an extremely shy 13-year-old who was afraid to talk to her,” he said. Everything seemed to connect, but there was one small problem: Lindsey was already married to someone else.
A New Career Path
But Lindsey’s marriage wasn’t exactly “sunshine and daisies.” Lindsey eventually divorced her husband after over a decade, and she decided to work at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. It was time for a new career, but she was thrilled to work side-by-side with Joel— her childhood crush. Joel even became close to Lindsey’s young daughter, and Lindsey knew he was “the one.”
Right Back Where They Started
While the couple may have been separated for decades, they were together again, and this time for forever. Joel and Lindsey got married in an emotional wedding at St. Jude. “Thanks to St. Jude, I was lucky enough to marry the love of my life, my best friend,” Lindsey shared. Now the couple is cancer-free and helping young patients at the hospital who were just like them.
