Man Freezes When Cheetah Jumps Into His Jeep On Safari

When you go on safari in Africa, you expect to run into wild animals. In fact, that’s the whole point of going. What you don’t expect is for that wildlife to hitch a ride with you. Britton Hayes knows what that’s like because a cheetah decided he was curious about what the humans were doing in his part of town.

The Adventure

Britton Hayes from Seattle traveled to East Africa for the adventure of a lifetime. He and a group of his friends hired Grand Ruaha Safari to drive with them across the Serengeti searching for cheetahs.

The cheetahs they found became curious about the vehicle approaching and, while the men were distracted by the wildcat on their hood, another cat decided to climb inside and make himself at home.

Don’t Panic

Hayes had a local guide in the jeep who coached him on exactly what to do. Predators feed on fear and movement, so the first thing he needed to do was to stay still and not move a muscle. Sensing his fear, the cheetah crouched in position and shifted his focus on the driver.

Amazed Monkey

Hayes was instructed to slow his breathing to bring his heart rate down, which he successfully did.

I felt like I had to clear my mind of any thoughts because from everything you’re told about predators like that, they can sense fear and any sort of discomfort you’re feeling and they’ll react accordingly. – Britton Hayes

When the curious cheetah decided he had enough, he slunk out of the jeep and continued his quest for lunch.

Cheetahs

Although it’s not a common occurrence, this isn’t the first time cheetahs in Africa have hopped in and on a vehicle driving across their terrain. They’ve become comfortable with visitors and have used vehicles for a better view across the Serengeti.

It’s important to keep in mind that although this may look cute and the cheetahs are beautiful to look at, they are still wild animals and these visits can turn deadly if not handled properly. Luckily for Hayes, he got through his adventure unscathed and went home with an exciting story to tell.
