‘Cosby Show’ Star Geoffrey Owens Stands Up For His Side Hustle At Trader Joes

A former star of The Cosby Show was horrified to find out that someone had snapped photos of him working at Trader Joe’s and shared it on the Internet. Though the photos were meant to embarrass him, it ultimately worked out for his good!

Job Shaming?

Geoffrey Owens is known for his role as Elvin Tibideaux on The Cosby Show and has done other theatre and TV gigs since then. However, role opportunities slowed and it took a hit on his finances. The hardest hit was losing residual income for reruns of The Cosby Show after networks pulled the show following the Bill Cosby scandal. So Geoffrey unselfishly took a side job at Trader Joes to help provide for his family.

To his shock and dismay, unflattering photos taken during one of his shifts were posted on various news outlets. Many shamed him for being spotted “bagging groceries,” though he was once a prominent actor. The stories hurt Geoffrey, but also motivated him to speak out.

Taking A Stand

After the photos came out, Geoffrey did a number of interviews speaking out about the apparent job shaming. He admitted that he was upset at first. “I felt really humiliated,” he said in an interview. “They went out of their way to find the very worst picture of me, in the worst shirt and the worst posture. The words they used to describe me were so demeaning. It hurt.”

The Blaze

However, the actor is unashamed of taking the job at Trader Joe’s while he attempts to get his career back on track. After all, if it means he and his family are taken care of, that’s all that matters.  “I’m going to keep pursuing it. I’m going to persevere,” Geoffrey shared. “And even if that means, that eventually when all this hoopla dies down, I might need to take another job outside of the business. I’m still willing to do that,” he said. Already, Geoffrey’s stories have reached so many, with a few great opportunities coming his way!

Rising Back Up

The actor’s courage to speak out has inspired others to take a stand against job shaming stories like this. Those in the entertainment industry specifically understood exactly what Geoffrey was going through. “I had been a working actor for years. Jobs stopped, as they do. I worked in retail. At a flower shop. I passed out flyers,” actress Pamela Adlon tweeted about Geoffrey’s situation. “It’s about the work. Work gives you pride and purpose. Your visibility as an actor never goes away. But the money sure does.”

The Wrap

Geoffrey has been offered money and even TV roles after his story came out. In fact, Tyler Perry offered him a 10-episode stint in The Haves and the Have Nots on OWN. Geoffrey did accept the major gig, and, hopefully, that gets him back on the right track in Hollywood. However, the actor will never be too proud to work at Trader Joe’s or any other job that helps pay the bills!
