Customers Run Coffee Shop For a Day While Employees Go to the Beach

Cafe Buunni in Hudson Heights, New York, recently celebrated its five-year anniversary and their loyal customers figured out an awesome way to give back to their fave coffee shop.

How The Idea Came About

Sarina Prabasi runs the shop with her husband, Elias Gurmu. When the shop’s anniversary came around, Prabasi wanted to give her staff the day off, perhaps arranging a beach day for them to all enjoy some downtime together.

“We wanted to do something nice for the staff. We’re open seven days a week, from morning to evening. It’s not very often that we get the whole team together,” said Prabasi.

However, a customer by the name of Melody Morrow came up with a pretty cool idea: Why not let the customers take over for the day?

“I’ve been in the neighborhood for nine years … and in a small neighborhood, you know when something good comes in. I’ve been there from the start and for me, it’s become more than a coffee shop, it’s more of a neighborhood happening,” Morrow said. “It’s a great cup of coffee too. You can’t beat that,” she added.

Enjoy Your Day Off

And so the deal was set. A bunch of the coffee shop’s regulars signed up to cover one-hour shifts from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, August 16. The idea was so popular, in fact, that Prabasi is thinking of doing this every year, giving her employees a chance to hang out together as sort of a team building outing and letting Cafe Buunni customers take over for the day.

“If the response I had is any indication, we might do this every year,” Prabasi said.

The group ended up having a great day at the beach and documented their time on social media.

“Loving our beach day! Thanks to our amazing customers for watching the shop while we relax,” read a post on the shop’s Facebook page.
