This year’s draft is the 81st annual draft to occur – crazy, right? The NFL draft’s aim is to select new and eligible football players to play for various teams in this upcoming 2016-2017 football season. This year’s draft is taking place at the Auditorium Theater in grand ole’ Chicago, Illinois. The theater, located at Roosevelt University, also hosted the NFL draft last year, and according to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, “Chicago continues to raise the bar for future drafts.”

NFL drafting is exciting. It marks the beginning of the preparations necessary to start the upcoming football season (which we all can’t wait for!!!). In total, there are seven rounds of drafting that occur over the course of several days. The first round is always exciting, though, because this is where the first pick happens. The first pick is important, and most teams want to have it because it means they get the first choice at the top collegiate football players. This year, the Los Angeles Rams had first pick.

The LA Rams chose Jared Goff as their newest player, playing the position of quarterback. Goff previously played for his college team, the California Golden Bears (University of California, Berkeley). Goff was the first true freshman quarterback in UC history to start the season as quarterback, a testament to his great playing skills. Last year (Goff’s junior year), the upcoming player set the records for passing yardage, with 4,714 yards thrown, and for most touchdown passes in a season, with 43 passes. Go Goff!

Let’s see how this top pick does this upcoming season! As for the rest of the picks, in Round 1, Ohio State led in new recruits, with 5 picks. This marked the first time that a university had three players drafted in the top ten. You go, Ohio State University! They were then followed by Ole Miss, with 3 picks, and Notre Dame and University of Florida with 2 picks each.

Also notable in this year’s draft, the New England Patriots had their selection during Round 1 of drafting forfeited as punishment for their prime involvement in the 2015 football tampering scandal during their championship game against the Indianapolis Colts, otherwise known as the “deflategate” scandal. Instead, the team will get two picks towards the end of Round 2 of drafting. The team will also be penalized in future drafts for their involvement in the scandal.

Otherwise, this year’s NFL draft went very smoothly, with lots of good picks for the upcoming season. Now that the draft is over, it’s just a few short months before football season can start again! Goooooo team!
