Doctor Allows Seventh-Grader to Assist in Delivery of Baby Brother
Jacee Dellapena had the biggest thrill in her young life as she helped deliver her very own baby brother at a hospital in Mississippi. The 12-year-old from Brandon even got the exciting chance of cutting his umbilical cord.
The seventh-grader was peeking through the delivery room’s window, but due to the delivery table’s being too high for her to have a good view, she was frustrated.
Dellapena recalls: “I started crying because I was too short to see anything. The doctor was like, ‘Just go ahead and get some gear on and come help me deliver the baby.’ I was like, are you kidding me? Are you being real?”
The attending doctor’s unexpected offer also surprised Dellapena’s mom, 34-year-old Dede Carraway. She shares: “I couldn’t believe it. I was like, what? Uh, no. Never in a million years. But the doctor said, ‘I’m being serious. I’ll guide her hands and everything.’ So she got up in there and was suddenly in the middle of everything.”
It was later on revealed that Dellapena had adamantly wanted to witness the birth of another baby brother of hers, now 18-month-old Zayden, but was not approved by her mother who thought her too young at the time. And the moment the little girl found out that another baby was on the way, she had been persistently waiting for her mom’s approval, but to no avail.
But thanks to one cool doctor, mom’s decision was unexpectedly swayed toward Dellapena’s favor. The mom explains: “She’s already had sex ed at school. I didn’t see no reason why she shouldn’t be there,” she said. “I don’t hide anything from her. I think that the human body is natural and if she learned about it at school, there’s no reason why she shouldn’t learn about it at home, too.”
Asked about the rare and wonderful experience, Dellapena answers: “I couldn’t believe it. It was like, oh my goodness, I just delivered a baby, and it’s my baby brother, and I’m going to tell him when he gets older that I delivered him. I can’t wait.”
