Jimmy Kimmel Left In Tears Over Ellen DeGeneres’ Unbelievable Gift To His Son
Ellen DeGeneres is known for surprising her guests, but her latest effort was a little different. Jimmy Kimmel, host of his eponymous late-night show Jimmy Kimmel Live!, was left in tears after his latest appearance on The Ellen show, where he promoted this year’s Oscars ceremony that he would be hosting.
A Touching Surprise
As well as talking about hosting the awards, Kimmel took the opportunity to publicly thank Ellen and her viewers for raising $1 million for Children’s Hospital in LA. His son Billy underwent heart surgery at the facility last year after being born with a heart defect. DeGeneres then campaigned to raise funds for the hospital in Billy’s honor.
What Jimmy didn’t know was that Ellen had secretly organized another touching tribute to Billy and after thanking her for her generosity, she explained that she had a surprise for him. Jimmy joked: “That could go either way on this show.” But Ellen insisted it was a good surprise.
Kimmel In Tears
She explained to the astounded host they hadn’t just raised $1 million. Ellen said: “We called our friends at Children’s Hospital L.A., including Billy’s surgeon, and we have named one of the rooms of the heart institute floor in honor of Billy. That will forever be the Billy Kimmel room.”
She even revealed that some of Billy’s nurses were sitting in the audience. Jimmy’s reaction was so emotional, it had many of the audience in tears.
The late-night host is rarely left speechless, but the incredible gesture was too much for him and he held back tears as he thanked Ellen. They then cut to a video of the recently-named room, showing a plaque that read: “In Honor of Billy Kimmel.”
Kimmel later tweeted his thanks to Ellen, along with a picture of Billy. It read: “Thank you to my ridiculously generous friend Ellen and the kind and excellent doctors & nurses @ChildrensLA for this beautiful gift in our son’s name.” It was almost a year ago that Jimmy revealed the nightmare experience he and his wife went through when Billy was born.
A Parent’s Nightmare
During one of the opening monologues to Jimmy Kimmel Live! in April 2017, a tearful Jimmy revealed his newborn son’s health crisis. “Six pushes, he was out,” Kimmel said describing the birth. “He appeared to be a healthy normal baby until about three hours after he was born.”
