The Look On This Kid’s Face When He Meets His Baby Brother Is Everything

Some people dream of becoming a doctor, a lawyer, or a firefighter. But since he was a toddler, Mickey had only dreamed of becoming a big brother. When his parents struggled with conceiving a child, he thought his dream would never come true. Despite tragedies along the way, a miracle happened, and his life changed forever.

A Lifelong Dream

Since he was a toddler, Mickey only talked about one thing: becoming a big brother. He would frequently ask his parents when he was going to get a sibling. The couple started trying for a second baby when Mickey was three years old, but they didn’t have much luck. After a year of trying, the couple decided to visit infertility clinics and Jessica underwent surgery to increase her chance of pregnancy.

A Sudden Loss

When Mickey turned five years old, his mom Jessica found out she was pregnant. Everyone was thrilled, but no one was more excited than Mickey. He was finally going to fulfill his dream of being a big brother. Unfortunately, Jessica experienced complications and miscarried at 11 weeks. It was confirmed the baby had trisomy 13, a condition in which the baby would have an extra chromosome 13.

“It took my breath away,” Jessica said. “Mikey had gotten his baby brother, except now he was our angel baby.”

An Unexpected Miracle

Mickey’s parents decided they would remain a family of three, but Mickey reminded the couple daily that he wanted to be a big brother. They had no choice but to tell him he may never get a baby brother, and the news broke his heart. When Mickey started kindergarten, however, Jessica experienced pregnancy symptoms — and later found out it was for real! But that didn’t stop her from being concerned about having another miscarriage.

A NICU Baby

At her 23-week appointment, Jessica’s doctor discovered the baby wasn’t growing at the rate he should. Jessica was worried she would lose the baby, but everything was okay until her 30-week appointment. It was decided she should deliver the baby then to avert the risk of a stillbirth. Jake Eric was born weighing only one pound, 12 ounces. He would remain in the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

A Joyful Meeting

Mickey was terrifically excited to finally meet the younger brother he had always dreamed about. Jessica assumed he would never get to hold him in the NICU, but doctors agreed he could do a “skin-to-skin” meeting. Mickey held his little brother close to his chest.

After 62 days in the NICU, Jake came home. To Jessica, it was one of the happiest days of her life. “I truly believe it became the foundation for their brotherly bond. […] Mikey is an amazing big brother and having Jake has brought a calmness to Mikey’s life, and Mikey has a way of calming Jake when he is upset.”

These two will certainly share an incredible connection for the rest of their lives.
