A recent study published in the journal Motivation and Emotion took a deeper look into what makes running easier, and how people can use this to their advantage. The Researchers — who were from the Cognitive Science Team at the U.S. Army Natick Soldier Research, Development, and Engineering Center — found that a neutral, detached attitude may be the running trick we’ve all been looking for.

Detached Vs. Distracted

The researchers studied two techniques, one being a detached perspective on running and the other being distracted. They found that viewing a run objectively, through a detached mindstate, helped runners feel less mental exhaustion than those who chose to distract themselves from the activity at hand by zoning out on something completely unrelated.

Just Run Lah!

Here’s where you work this to your advantage. Rather than trying to distract yourself with music or other techniques while you run, instead, look at your run as objectively as if you were a scientist or journalist. By seeing your run as neither good nor bad in the moment, you will feel happier and healthier afterward. Not to mention, you’ll be more motivated to hit the trail again tomorrow.
