We Need to Talk About This Anti-Smoking Ad About Cats
We need to talk about this anti-smoking ad about cats because it is probably the first time an anti-smoking ad is trending on social media and one that everyone is talking about. We have been told time after time about how bad smoking is for you and have it can kill you and cause cancer and blah blah blah. It seems like no matter how hard anti-smoking campaigns try to get people to stop smoking, their attempts fail because people “do what they want”. We see ad after ad of gross looking lungs, decaying teeth, and even death, but still, people won’t give up their habit. As scary as some of those advertisements can be, it isn’t something people think will happen to them or can’t relate to it. Now, in an era where we have a lot more young people smoking, the anti-smoking group, Truth Initiative, decided to pull that one card to get us to stop smoking: smoking kills cats and without cats we would have no funny cat videos to watch.
I guess Truth initiative realized that no one was interested in seeing an advertisement about horrible looking lungs because people don’t like seeing the sad truth (just like everyone changes that channel when that soul-killing Sarah McLachlan commercial comes on) but people are interested in seeing a bunch of silly cat videos. That’s exactly what the ad shows us: a bunch of clips of our favorite cat videos we have watched endless times on Youtube along with facts stating that cats can get cancer from second-hand smoking. We are told that it is up to us to prevent #catmageddon or else you won’t have adorable cat videos to watch. So obviously our generation doesn’t care about our health and look at the long term effects, but threaten to take our cats away, and boom, people may start quitting.
Check out the anti-smoking ad yourself. What do you think about it?
