These Breathtaking Photos Will Have You Dying To Visit This Magical European Mountain Range
“The mountains are calling, and I must go,” John Muir, an author and early advocate for wilderness preservation in the United States, once said. While this quote is referenced by nature lovers everywhere, a set of photos from Polish photographer Michal Galczynski has given it new meaning. Along with his girlfriend and her parents, Galczynski captured photos of the amazing Tatra mountain range in Slovakia. The results are nothing short of incredible.
The Tremendous Tantras
“For me, it’s one of the top 10 most beautiful places in Europe,” explains Galczynski. It’s no wonder why he’s so captivated by the Tantras.
Forming a natural border between the countries of Slovakia and Poland, the Tantra Mountains belong to the highest mountain range among the Carpathian Mountains. The highest peak, known as Gerlach, reaches 8,710 feet.
A Troubled History
Though breathtaking, the Tantra Mountains haven’t always been accessible to eager hikers and travelers.
After the collapse of the Austrian Empire in 1918, it became illegal to hike across the Tantras without passing through an official border checkpoint. For decades, hikers and travelers were left without checkpoints along the border ridge, making many peaks in the Tantra illegal to visit. It wasn’t until 2007 that it became completely legal to cross the border of Poland and Slovakia along the Tantras. Therefore, the range has been an un-touched treasure to many.
A Dreamy, Diverse Landscape
If you thought there were only mountains along the Tantras, you’d be mistaken. The range is also home to several beautiful, cascading waterfalls, making it a must-see destination for even the world’s most seasoned travelers.
If you’re lucky enough to visit this enchanting place, you’re likely to see many animals including foxes, marmots, the Eurasian lynx, and more. But don’t just take our word for it. If these breathtaking photos are any proof of what the Tantras have to offer, they surely contain much more magic to discover.
