One Of These Plants Was Literally Bullied By Kids For 30 Days
Every year on May 4th, the world observes Anti-Bullying Day. This year, an IKEA in the UAE decided to conduct an experiment to demonstrate the effects of bullying on living things. But instead of using people as the subject of their experiment, they used plants. The results are quite eyeopening.
As many people are already aware, IKEA sells home goods as well as plants. This store in the Middle East installed two of its plants at a school. They were placed only a couple feet apart in exactly the same spot. They were given the same amount of water, sunlight, and fertilizer.
The only difference in the experiment was that one plant was fed compliments and the other was bullied. One plant was provided with happy thoughts and words of encouragement. The other plant was harassed with hateful words and criticism. Students were encouraged to record their statements either first hand or via social media.
After 30 days of constant attention, the plants had visible differences. The plant that had been given compliments and words of encouragement was thriving. Its leaves were perky and green as ever. However, the plant that was being bullied looked sad. Its leaves were droopy and began to turn brown.
A Lesson Learned
IKEA’s bullying experiment proves how powerful positive reinforcement really is. Verbal harassment can cause physical damage to living things over time. Plants have feelings too! This social experiment forced students to think about what they were saying and how their words can have an effect on those around them.
This is an opportunity for other companies to use their influence in a positive way. IKEA’s innovative idea has sparked conversations among schools and parents. It is bringing awareness to other businesses all over the world. Best of all, the students who were involved never once hurt another student to learn that bullying is bad. Thank you, IKEA!
