Ramirez, a Venezuelan political exile and former legislator, who has lived in Panama after leaving Venezuela in 2014, was one of the delegates of Catholic lawmakers visiting Vatican to discuss Venezuela’s situation.

The National Catholic Register reported that Ramirez “explained the situation in Venezuela and situation facing political prisoners.” He also mentioned that the Pontiff is “praying a lot about it and is doing all that he could to help.”

After spending a couple of minutes chatting with Pope Francis regarding Venezuela’s political and economical status, the Ramirez surprised everyone when he got down on one knee.

Ramirez said: “I explained to the Holy Father that the woman next to me is the woman of my life. I met her in church, that God put her in my life, and I want to propose to her.”

The lawmaker popped the question to Espinal who was clueless and shocked about her boyfriend’s plans. MSN reported that the Espinal “feared he might ask the Pope for a selfie.”

The Pontiff was utterly impressed by Ramirez’ move and said: “Wow, in front of the Pope!” The Pontiff then addressed the shocked woman who remained quiet saying, “She’s not speaking – he asked you to marry him, what do you say?”

Getting a grasp of what was happening, Espinal replied: “Yes, of course.”

After the unexpected proposal, the couple received the Pope’s blessings.

People who witnessed the proposal cheered the newly-engaged couple. Ramirez told National Catholic Register that “The Pope was very surprised; the people from protocol were a little mad, but in the end we all laughed a lot.”
