Simon Cowell’s Generosity Saved This Teen Dancer’s Life

For much of Julia Carlile’s life, what brought her the most joy also inflicted the most pain.

Passion And Pain

Julia suffered from scoliosis since birth, causing her spine to develop a dangerous curve that increasingly threatened her lungs and back. Still, she developed a passion for dancing at the age of five and refused to give up on her talent.

With the help of her friends and one man’s generosity, she wouldn’t have to! At 15, Julia teamed up with her childhood friends to form a dance team called Mersey Girls. Not long after coming together, they appeared on Britain’s Got Talent, where viewers got to witness Julia’s incredible story of persistence.

A Life-Altering Opportunity

They also learned that for her to continue dancing, she would need an expensive, experimental surgery in America that would allow her back to bend in ways that other surgeries could not — one that prize money could pay for.

After giving a spectacular, emotional performance that had audience members wiping their eyes, the Mersey Girls received the famous “golden buzzer” from one of the judges, Alesha Dixon, that advanced them in the competition! They went on to receive 4th place in the entire contest. While Julia believed that show was her last chance to showcase her dancing abilities, she had no idea what was in store!

A Dream-Saving Donation

As soon as the Mersey Girls left the BGT stage for the final time, judge Simon Cowell met them backstage to reveal to Julia that he wanted to pay for her entire surgery — nearly $233,000. Julia was in shock over his generosity, and though it seemed more like a dream than reality, his promise was well-kept. After being flown to America, undergoing the life-saving surgery, and enduring three months of recovery, Julia is currently rebuilding the strength to continue to pursue her life’s passion.

With Simon’s help, she will be able to dance with an ease and enjoyment she never could before. “It is unreal still now,” she shared with The Sun, “and we cannot thank him enough.” Thanks to Simon, Julia will be graceful and unbreakable onstage for years to come!
