Couple Sees Photo Of Shelter Dog, And Drives 6 Hours To Rescue Him

Adopting your first puppy is one of the most exciting experiences in a person’s life. Many people dream of being able to bring home a cute, friendly, furry dog friend to love. And that’s what Jessica Williams likely had in mind when she moved in with her boyfriend Jared in Sacramento, California. Jared told Jessica she could get one for her birthday, a few months down the road. But Jessica wasted no time before beginning her search for a lovable pup.

But, she never expected what came next….

Jessica Came Across A Sad Shelter Dog Online

While browsing, Jessica found Benji, a stray that was being kept at a public shelter in Los Angeles— six hours away from where she was living with Jared in Sacramento. Most people would see the considerable distance as a deal-breaker, and move on with their search.

There was something that kept Jessica from doing so.

Benji Suffered From A Severe Flea Allergy

Because of multiple flea attacks and a resulting allergic reaction, Benji had lost most of his fur. Jessica was told that, after ten days of being at the L.A. shelter, Benji was not adjusting well. He was aggressive and unfriendly toward people walking by, snarling and growling at them – so it’s not hard to see why most had been wary about adopting him.

Six Grueling Hours To See Benji

Once they got to the shelter, the staff wasn’t exactly encouraging about Jessica adopting Benji (quite the opposite). They were even hesitant about having the couple meet Benji. But Jessica and Jared were adamant, and soon they got to meet Benji.

As predicted, Benji wasn’t very friendly or cuddly. There was something Jessica saw in him, though.

Finding His Forever Home

Of course, one can imagine if Benji was having a difficult time getting comfortable in the shelter, a six-hour car ride with complete strangers probably didn’t help his temperament much. Once they got home to Sacramento, Benji spent the first few days distancing himself. Jessica and Jared gave him the space he needed.

Then, after giving it some time, something amazing happened.

Happiness At Last!

“He loves to come up and lick our faces and play with his toys,” Williams told The Dodo. “He is such a goofball now!” Williams added, “He has crazy zoomies after he gets bathed. He will also start barking the second we get in the car as if to say, ‘We have to start moving! Let’s go!’”

All it took was someone to have faith in Benji and give him the comfort, space, and time he needed to feel safe.
