Stray Cat Enrolls In Third Grade (Kind Of)

Last month, a cat wandered into an elementary school in Izmir, Turkey, and adopted an entire third-grade class. Basically. Or maybe he decided he needed an education. Either way, he made this school his new home.

Tombi The Stray Cat

Tombi made his way to the school at the beginning of this year. Unlike most strays, he was friendly, outgoing and interacted nicely with the students on a regular basis. After roaming around in the school’s garden for a couple of weeks, Tobi finally decided to make his way inside.

Based on his interactions with students, they already knew he was smart. So, a third-grade classroom seemed like the perfect place for him to start.

Özlem Pınar Ivaşcu And Her Class

Özlem Pınar Ivaşcu, or Mrs. Ivaşcu, said that when Tombi entered her classroom, her students instantly connected with him. Most would probably think that having a cat in the classroom might distract the students. However, it actually made a lot them more willing to learn because they were more eager to come to class.

Before Tombi, Mrs. Ivaşcu noted that many of her students would play around in the classroom between lessons. Tombi gave them something to focus on during those in-between moments. Students also started showing up to school early, therefore they were always on time because they wanted to see Tombi before class started.

A Bump In The Road

After learning a stray cat had become a part of the class, a student’s parent complained about the possible health risks and Tombi had to go. They originally found a home for Tombi to stay in, but he was very unhappy there, and so were the students. Then, Mrs. Ivaşcu took him into her own house, but he still was not happy. So, she finally took the issue to social media.

From there, Tombi’s story spread all around the world. People from all different countries wanted Tombi to return to his classroom. Both the school and the original parent that complained had a change of heart and Tombi was allowed to come back to class. Tombi continues to change the lives of the students in his class and will likely help change many more lives. Since his story broke, more classrooms across the country in Turkey are hoping to adopt a cat of their own. Nice work, Tombi. A+.
