How A 101 Year Old Man Still Gives Back To His Community
Edward Kydd from Rockledge, Florida, is a man who knows the importance of giving back to his community. That’s why at 101 years old, he spends every single week delivering meals to those in need.
Meals On Wheels
Meals on Wheels is a community-based service, which couldn’t exist without volunteers like Kydd and his daughter. The organization provides fresh, nutritious meals to the elderly, and those with disabilities. It’s not only about the food either, it’s about the human contact that some of these people tied to their homes miss.
Without Meals on Wheels, most of these people couldn’t live on their own, and because of generous volunteers, they’re able to continue to live independent lives.
Man On A Mission
Ed Kydd decided a long time ago that the way to stay young, is to stay active, and a great way to spend your time is giving back to the community you’re a part of. That’s exactly what he lives by. Every Monday, he and his daughter, 73-year-old Janet von Berg, hop in their vehicle to pick up meals for the needy.
They spend the day together, visiting the elderly and the disabled, giving them the gift of good food and company. Two things that are important to everyone.
Engage At Every Age
The 2018 theme for Older Americans Month in Kydd’s community was Engage at Every Age, and something he took to heart. Volunteering and giving back to your community is ageless. If you’re willing to give, there’s a place for everyone at any age to give back and help out in every community.
Kydd has a theory about his longevity and his activity level at 101. He says, “I think the reason I’m going to be 102 in July is because I’ve stayed active.” That’s a good mantra to live by. Stay active, stay generous, and give to those who need it the most. Secrets from a man who gives of his time and sets an example for others to follow.
