Even though they’re sour on their own, lemons can make some nice, cold glasses of sweet lemonade on a hot day. However, that’s not the only thing they’re good for. Surprisingly, there are several great ways that you can use lemons in life, even when you’re trying to clean up around the house!
Wipe Down Your Microwave
The microwave is probably one of the most ignored appliances in the home when it comes to cleaning. However, it definitely needs a good scrub regularly and lemons can help with that. All you have to do is cut a lemon in half and squeeze the juice into a microwave-safe bowl. Add 1/2 cup of water as well as the lemon halves. Then microwave the lemon water for three minutes or until it boils. Let the bowl sit for five minutes in the microwave. The lemon water will help to loosen the gross, stuck-on food particles sitting inside your microwave. Watch a video on how you can easily clean your microwave with this hack below.
Create Your Own Dishwasher Detergent
For those of you with your own dishwasher, lemons can help comprise your own homemade dishwasher detergent. This combination will get your dishes looking clean and beautiful after a meal. Mix 1/4 cup baking soda, 1/4 cup white vinegar, 1/4 cup Borax, 1 tsp coarse salt, and 2 tbsp lemon juice together. Then pour this “detergent” into the soap compartment of your dishwasher. It will help to easily get rid of tough stains just like any leading detergent on the market.
Make Your Shower Sparkle
Those who have glass shower doors know how difficult it can be to get rid of soap scum and water stains. However, there is a way to get those doors to shine beautifully again. Mixing lemon and sea salt can help break down those ugly stains that build up. Cut a lemon in half and dip the exposed end into a dish of sea salt. Use that lemon to scrub your shower door in a circular motion and your doors will shine bright like a diamond.
Make Lemon-Scented Cleaning Wipes
Here’s another cleaning hack that could save you money at the grocery store. You can make your own cleaning wipes using lemons at home. Dip clean washrags in a mixture of water and white distilled vinegar. Add in a few drops of olive oil and soak. Then wring out the washrags and roll the peels from 4-6 lemons, placing them in the cloths. Store in an air-tight container until it’s time to clean. This will be a great alternative to other wipes in stores that are typically laced with chemicals.
Deep Clean Your Dishwasher
It can be tough to get stains from your dishes sometimes when you’re using your dishwasher. The task is even harder when you’ve used it a while and there are some old food particles still floating around in there. When they end up on your clean plates, it can be even more annoying. Lemons will help to deep clean your dishwasher once and for all. Cut a lemon in half and place the pieces on the top rack of the dishwasher. Then run the lemons through a cleaning cycle with soap by themselves. That will give your dishwasher the deep clean it’s been needing.
Bet you didn’t realize that lemons could be used for so many other things. Now when life gives you lemons, you can make lemonade…or some great homemade cleaning products! Your house will always stay really fresh and clean by consistently using these five life hacks.
