Mental illness is a huge issue in todays society. Despite many people misunderstanding the cause and symptoms of different mental illnesses or believing that many people who suffer from them may just be over exaggerating, the reality of this situation is that the number of people who have mental illnesses is unfortunately growing much more rapidly than anyone would like. Whether it’s depression, anxiety, panic disorder, bipolar disorder, a personality disorder, schizophrenia, or any other mental illness, being a celebrity does not make you immune from the possibility of suffering from one. Here are some incredibly popular celebrities who you probably don’t know suffer from mental illness.

Throughout his successful acting and directing career, Mel Gibson has been known to deal with a very debilitating mental illness that has highly affected his life. Gibson has dealt with both intense mania episodes as well as deep depression episodes, giving him a diagnosis of bipolar disorder. The symptoms of his mental illness combined with his obsessive use of alcohol have made it very hard for him to work with others on screen and off, and has been the reason for many different fights with other actors and crew members throughout his career.

Though you’d never know it by looking at her and all of the success that she has had throughout her career, Jessica Alba has talked about how she has been suffering from mental illness for years. Ever since she was a child she has suffered from obsessive-compulsive disorder, having moments of impulses to repeat certain things and have things in a certain way for as long as she could remember. Alba has worked very hard throughout her life to try her best to control her compulsions, and obviously it has worked. She continues to have a very impressive acting career, along with her company “The Honest Company” becoming increasingly successful.

Throughout her life and successful acting career, Catherine Zeta Jones has had to battle her severe mental illness. The 46 year old Academy Award winning actress was given a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, dealing with her own illness while her husband Michael Douglass was battling cancer. She has suffered from these extreme manic and depressive episodes for years, and even checked herself into a mental facility for psychiatric help in the past. It has become obvious to both her and her fan base that her illness has affected her career quite a bit, and her manic and depressive episodes have prevented her from getting certain acting jobs that could have seriously furthered her career.

4. Michael Phelps

He’s best known for his wide collection of Olympic medals for swimming, but Michael Phelps has been vocal in the past about also suffering from a mental illness for all of his life. Phelps has suffered from ADHD for as long as he could remember, which is Attention Deficit Hyperativity Disorder. He has talked about how starting his swimming career as a young child has been the one thing that has helped with his ADHD symptoms, and he channeled that into becoming an Olympic Gold Medalist for the Untied States in multiple swimming events.

This child star turned gorgeous adult actress and model is mostly known for her television and movie roles by her millions of fans worldwide, but did you know that she also has suffered from a mental illness? When she had her first child, Shields suffered severely from postpartum depression. She continues to talk freely about her own experience with this particular mental illness, advocating for mental illness as a whole in her free time and helping to erase the stigma of mental illness. She even receive an advocating award a few years ago from the Hope for Depression Research Foundation in Manhattan.

Everyone knew that before his passing, Michael Jackson went through some severe issues throughout his incredibly long and successful music career. Even being the Prince of Pop doesn’t excuse a person from suffering from mental illness, and unfortunately Jackson had to learn the hard way. Jackson dealt with a plethora of mental illnesses throughout his lifetime, including body dysmorphic disorder, the possibility of post traumatic stress disorder after being beaten as a child from his father, and depression are just a few that many people believe that he suffered from.

Growing up in front of the public in Hollywood will affect everyone negatively, and we all saw first hand how Britney Spears had some serious mental health issues less than a decade ago. Back in 2007, Spears had a serious mental breakdown, suffering from severe social anxiety and even going as far as unofficially self-diagnosing herself with bipolar disorder. The pop music star had a complete break down in front of the whole world, which included shaving her head and other things. Since then Britney has gotten treatment, gotten her life back togehter, and continues to have a very successful career in the pop music industry.
