Last spring, 37-year-old Marleen Brooks from Park Hills, Missouri came home to find an odd, handwritten letter at her door. The author was 90-year-old Wanda Mills, a woman Brooks has never met. The contents of the letter had Mrs. Mills pleading for a friendship of any kind. What follows next is a heartwarming story you won’t soon forget.
Get To Know Your Neighbors
In just a few short lines, Mills letter read: “Mrs? Would you consider to become my friend? I’m 90 years old – live alone and all my friends have passed away. I am so lonesome and scared. Please- I pray for someone.”
Tears poured down Marleen’s face as memories of her own, deceased grandmother came to mind. Seeing as she never visited her grandmother much while in hospice, this was her chance at redemption. It turned out, Mills lived just a few doors down from Brooks. From there, a new friendship began.
Cupcakes Make Everything Better
Brooks brought over cupcakes to Mills as an icebreaker. From there, the two sat down and talked for hours. In the conversation, Brooks learned that Mills hasn’t left her home in seven years due to trouble walking and using an oxygen tank. She needs to rely on caregivers who come every day. Still, it’s not the same as having a true friend.
Mills lived in that house for 51 years. Both her husband and sister have passed away as well as one of her sons. Another son lives out of state and a third actually lived next door. However, he didn’t visit often. Brooks took it upon herself to fill the void in Mills’ life with friendship.
The Effects Of Isolation
When getting old, most people tend to focus on physical ailments, but loneliness has been shown to have negative effects on health as well. It leaves people prone to depression and even infection. According to an AARP survey, one-third of older Americans are lonely.
That’s why Mills had an idea. She started a Facebook group called Pen Pals for seniors. There, you can match with an older person who wants to converse via the mail. in just over a month, over 6,000 responded. Hopefully, the trend catches on and the tragedy of isolation is put to rest.
