They’ll Stick By You: These Dog Breeds Have The Longest Life Expectancy

Published on

Everyone longs for a canine companion that’ll last a lifetime. Unfortunately, dogs rarely last beyond a decade and a half. While our puppy pals aren’t forever, these cool dog breeds come pretty close to it. These amazing dogs have impressive life expectancies that will surpass the average dog, and ensure plenty of years of their companionship.

25. Shih Tzu – 10-16 Years

Some may regard these adorable gremlins as just another small dog to show off in Instagram photos. However, the Shih Tzu is a breed with a strong history. They originate from Tibet, but made a name for themselves in China when the Dalai Lama gave one to the Chinese Emperor in the 17th century.

mariananthemenace/Instagram

Shih Tzus were regarded as royalty and were not to be owned by anyone outside of royalty. These unique-looking dogs are pretty amazing. They are sweet by nature, highly intelligent, and have very soft fur. They also have time on their side, as they can go on to live for up to 15 years.

24. Beagle – 12-15 Years

The Beagle is a beloved dog breed the world over. Their irresistible charms come from their ability to have an active and adventurous lifestyle, while also being very docile and passive. This makes them wonderful for families with small children.

beagle_corner/Instagram

Bringing a Beagle into the home will also save your children any unneeded heartbreak, as they could last well into their adulthood. The average beagle has a life expectancy that ranges between 12 and 15 years. There was a recorded case in 2003 of a Beagle named Butch who lived to be 27 years old. A well-maintained Beagle can end up being a friend for a very long time.

23. Pug – 12-15 Years

If any dog can trump the Pomeranian in popularity, it’s the Pug. Shocked to see it on this list? So are we. As it turns out, Pugs, who are well-known for having a slew of health issues, can live quite a long life if given the proper care.

justjamielisa/Instagram

Despite what might be expected, Pugs can actually live anywhere between 12 and 15 years. Though they’re quite prone to fear on many occasions and can be more than a little socially awkward at times, these dogs know how to thrive. If you just so happen to be in possession of an A-type personality, these dogs might be perfect for you, as they can pack a ton of personality.

22. Toy Poodle – 12-15 Years

Toy Poodles make amazing long-term companions. While they usually live between 12 and 15 years, there have been cases of these dogs living for up to two decades. These pups are perfect for active households, as they tend to have a whole lot of energy. However, there is plenty more to a Toy Poodle than just being active.

feqiu/Instagram

These dogs are extremely alert and responsive to their owners. If you’re after a dog that can be trained to show excellent obedience, this is the breed for you. Though delightfully playful, they can also be very sensitive and shy, especially around strangers that they’ve never met before.

21. Miniature Schnauzer – 12-15 Years

If you’re hoping to adopt a dog that’ll be around for the next 15 years, the Miniature Schnauzer is right up your alley. However, don’t think that a Schnauzer companion is going to be your silent sidekick for the next decade and a half. This is a dog who just loves being the center of attention. He/she will not settle for being a backseat driver in your relationship.

summmerjsmiles/Instagram

If you better understand your role in this dynamic, these dogs make amazing companions. According to Canna Pet, miniature schnauzers are extremely loving and well-mannered dogs. If you fancy the idea of going out for a run with your dog or playing long games of fetch, this is definitely the canine for you.

20. Lhasa Apso – 12-15 Years

Amid the many dogs on this list, the Lhasa Apso is definitely on the more unique side of the spectrum. Tucked away inside this odd little wonder is a heart that can go on beating for up to 15 years. We’d like to think that this longevity was what made this Tibetan breed desirable in ancient times.

imcoolpet/Instagram

While we may view these dogs as small and mop-like in the 21st century, they were once used as guard dogs for Buddhist temples. This dog’s strong point doesn’t end with how protective they are of their owners. They are also very affectionate and are always ready for a good amount of cuddles. On a down note, the Lhasa Apso can be stubborn and very vocal.

19. Corgi – 12-15 Years

Every household can use a lovable Corgi to liven up the mood. According to Canna Pet, Queen Elizabeth II’s favorite dog breed has a range of traits that make it a lovely pet. They are generally happy, smart, fun, love to play, and can be very obstinate.

becomingjj/Instagram

There is a down side, however. These dogs are known for being troublemakers. However, one can’t help but have a laugh over a little Corgi trying to be edgy. Once you have a Corgi in your possession, you’ll have a true blue pal for years to come, as these dogs can live up to the old of 15 years old.

18. Dachshund – 12-16 Years

Dachshunds are adorable dogs, but you must prepare yourself accordingly if you decide to buy one, as they can be a handful. According to the site Dogtime, they are incredibly intelligent and possess a very independent nature. They were also originally bred to be hunters and are sure to show a lot of these traits.

reneephilly/Instagram

Dachshunds are also stubborn by nature and therefore one of the hardest breeds to housebreak. They can also be extremely vocal, so you should look forward to a lot of barking. If you can manage to train a Dachshund and turn him/her into the perfect little puppy, they will be by your side for a long time, as their lifespan lasts usually between 12 to 15 years.

17. Pomeranian – 12-16 Years

In terms of popularity within the dog world, Pomeranians are on top. One cannot look at one of these joyous walking fur puffs and not want to cuddle them. Keep in mind, however, that while these little dogs might look harmless, they are definitely some of the sassiest members of the canine community.

consu3103/Instagram

However, once you garner their trust and have them properly trained, you’ll discover that they are one of the most loyal dog breeds on the market. They can also be ideal for a family with children. Seeing that most of these dogs are capable of living up to the age of 16, you can assure yourself that you’ll see many good years with your Pomeranian pal.

16. Australian Shepherd – 13-15 Years

According to the American Kennel Club, the Australian Shepherd ranks among the smartest dog breeds in the world. Someone who manages to win over this dog’s confidence can teach them a command in less than a day. They are also extremely hardworking. These high-energy dogs have a history defined by herding a variety of different animal species, from birds to sheep.

australianshepherdssquad/Instagram

Given how much these dogs like to be outdoors, it is important that they have an owner who is as active as they are. If you adopt one of these puppies, you can fully expect him or her to be in your life for the long haul. They can live up to be 15 years, which is very rare for a larger dog breed.

15. Jack Russell Terrier – 13-16 Years

According to Hills Pet, the Jack Russell Terrier is a dog that is naturally happy, so if you’re in the search for a pet that’ll bring on the positivity, look no further than this beloved breed. While these dogs are small, they definitely leave all the typical small dog qualities behind.

miranda_abbey/Instagram

These dogs are known for their loving companionship and nothing can give them more thrills than having a job to do. If your backyard gets infested by rodents, your Jack Russell will take care of the problem before you can even find out about it. If one decides to go for a Jack Russell when choosing a dog, they’ll have this little guy by their side for up to 16 years.

14. Yorkshire Terrier – 13-16 Years

Believe it or not, among the longest-living dog breeds is the Yorkshire Terrier. These itsy bitsy pups are known to live sometimes longer than 15 years. However, if not trained properly, those can be a very long 15 years. According to the website Hills Pets, the Yorkshire Terrier can be quite the handful — and not just literally.

lynetteviolettes/Instagram

They are energetic, domineering, and rather feisty. If you have kids in the home, they might not be a very compatible match with the little dog, as they won’t always be in the mood to be handled. They are also distinctly stubborn and have difficulties when it comes to being house-trained.

NEXT: These next dog breeds just so happen to be among the most popular ones in the entire world.

13. Collie – 13-16 Years

Lassie wasn’t modeled after a Collie because it’s just another basic breed; this dog is a survivor. For a large dog, it has an impressive life expectancy of 13 years. It may have to do with how fast and athletic these dogs are. Certainly the constant exercise they get plays a role in their longevity.

fergus_collie_pup/Instagram

Based off the relationship between Timmy and Lassie that we’re all familiar with, it’s obvious that these dogs make great companions. They’re very responsive to their owners and won’t hesitate to take commands. When Collies aren’t running about and exploring, they can be very affectionate and loving.

12. Standard Schnauzer – 13-16 Years

For a medium-sized dog, the Standard Schnauzer has a heck of a lifespan behind it. These high-spirited canines can live up to the grand old age of 16. The hardiest in the family, they usually have a greater chance of living longer than the Miniature Schnauzer.

dexterkingsschnauzer/Instagram

If you opt to bring a Standard Schnauzer into your life, you’ll have a companion by your side that will actually care for you. These dogs are easily trained and extremely loyal. According to Hills Pet, these dogs are smart to a fault. While most can’t possibly see a dog’s intelligence as being a bad thing, these dogs may in fact try to out-smart their owners!

11. Papillon – 13-17 Years

If you work a harsh nine-to-five job and have a bustling social life, then you’d better be prepared to have your pet Papillon at your side. These dogs thrive on human companionship and won’t be happy if they are left all alone for hours on end.

kellyyannmcc/Instagram

If given the right amount of attention, a Papillon can be a beautiful dog to own. These tufty-eared pups are very gentle and have a playful personality. According to Canna Pet, they love to please their owners and will work hard to earn their attention. If you adopt a Papillon, you can rest assured that you’ll have a friendship that can last up to 17 years.

10. Schipperke – 13-17 Years

If you’re someone who desires a small dog that will outlive just about any other dog breed out there, you’ll want to find yourself a Schipperke. According to Grunge, these dogs on average live for about 17 years, but can live to be much older. In dog years, this means they live well into their 90s.

niccole_drax/Instagram

Like most small dogs you’ll come across, the Schipperke breed is prone to being stubborn and they have a penchant for barking up a storm. While that may sway some, these dogs are actually a whole lot of fun. They are cited by Hills Pet as being curious, intelligent, and particularly active.

9. Manchester Terrier – 14-17 Years

Loyal, athletic, independent, alert, and adventurous, the Manchester Terrier presents people with the true spirit of a terrier. Despite the small size of this breed, they actually make amazing watch dogs. When it comes to protecting those dear to them, any self-awareness of their own stature goes out the window.

sofiakieloaho/Instagram

With that in mind, if their trust and love can be gained, you’ll be looking at an excellent canine companion. According to the American Kennel Club, these dogs can live to the old age of 17. The Manchester Terrier is a breed that you can really grow with, as they are highly intelligent and have a drive to learn.

8. Cockapoo – 14-18 Years

While purebred dogs are often thought of as being superior to hybrids, the Cockapoo is a mix that demonstrates true greatness. Not only does this popular Cocker Spaniel and Poodle mix have the ability to live up to the age of 16, but it has traits that a lot of people would seek to have in their dog.

stacy.dascher/Instagram

They take the best of both worlds from their gene pool, inheriting the positive traits of the Spaniel and Poodle, as this dog is smart, loyal, and easy to train. What’s more, if you’re worried about getting a dog and having fur all over your furniture, you’re in luck with a Cockapoo.

NEXT: The next dog is revered for being one of the smartest breeds in the world.

7. Pyrenean Shepherd – 15-17 Years

Hailing from the mountainous Pyrenees region between France, Spain, and Andorra, meet the adorable Pyrenean Shepherd. Like most of its family, this dog was originally bred for herding. These canines are a rare sight in the United States, but are all the rage across the Atlantic in Europe.

reinorepalainen/Instagram

While this dog is small, it has the heart of a Great Dane. According to Pet Guide, the Pyrenean Shepherd is one of the more energetic dogs on the market. If you’re more about the couch and less about the track, you might want to look into adopting a Chihuahua. These dogs are easy to train and can perform tasks that other dogs would struggle with.

6. Rat Terrier – 15-18 Years

Getting back to the smaller side of the canine spectrum, we have the Rat Terrier. This perky fella can stick by your side for up to 18 years. While you ought not to expect to have a dog that will listen to your every beck and call, these dogs are fearless, stubborn, and quite smart.

planprepareportion/Instragram

While most little dogs enjoy a life of being pampered, Rat Terriers have hearts for adventure. However, they do have a tendency to be reserved and wary when it comes to meeting strangers. That said, you’ll want to give him or her time to warm up to someone before having them dog sit for you.

5. Mexican Hairless Dog – 12-20 Years

The Mexican Hairless Dog is another canine breed that was once revered as sacred. They were regarded as being guides into the underworld in ancient Aztec culture, and in fact they were often sacrificed and buried alongside their owners. Even today, these dogs are very beloved in Mexico.

magdalenamegg/Instagram

While their hairless appearance might be off-putting to some, these dogs make great companions. They are extremely affectionate, playful, have an easy-going temper, and are very smart. They are also quite protective of their owners. Getting one of these dogs will come with years of companionship, as they can thrive for up to 20 years.

4. Maltese – 12-20 Years

The Maltese is like many of the other dogs on this list, as it is both on the small size spectrum as well as having a life expectancy that can surpass two decades. While most dogs are perfect for families, these little darlings might be better for someone who doesn’t like the idea of having kids any time soon.

lincolnzamanley/Instagram

On paper, these dogs are wonderful. According to Hills Pet, Maltese are extremely gentle, affectionate, intelligent, and trusting. However, Maltese also have a reputation for being snappy and raucous when it comes to interacting with children. This should definitely set alarm bells off for moms and dads.

3. Shiba Inu – 12-20 Years

Not every dog with impressive longevity has to be below knee height. A medium-sized dog that can, remarkably, live for up to twenty years is the Shiba Inu. You’ll get no stress from one of these canines, as Dog Time reports that they are generally alert, bold, and good-natured.

roxybraut/Instagram

This curly-tailed Japanese breed won’t be a good match for all personalities. They are strong-willed pups and pretty much demand an owner with the same traits. That said, they are clean, quiet, and very loyal to their families. If you want a dog that will last and actually won’t bark up a storm, this is the breed to adopt.

2. Chihuahua – 12-20 Years

The Chihuahua comes across as one of the most fragile dogs in the canine community. When in the company of a stranger they quiver in fear, they shake when the temperature hits below 70, and will yap at dogs five times their size. One can argue that this little dog goes through life practically begging for trouble.

chihuahuarescuer/Instagram

That said, Chihuahuas are surprisingly resilient. With a life expectancy of twenty years, these little fellas will give any other dog breed a run for its kibble. If you’re looking for a canine companion that’ll cover a significant amount of your life, get a Chihuahua. You’ll be hearing that yap for decades.

1. Australian Cattle Dog – 16-29 Years

Whether it be good genes or toughness brought on by the harsh conditions of life in the Australian outback, the Australian Cattle Dog is a breed that was built to last. The oldest of its kind ever recorded lived to be 29 years old. While most won’t last for three decades, the average one can live to be 16 and over.

ethanaldrichal/Instagram

Thankfully, for the decade and a half you spend with them, these dogs make wonderful companions and great protectors. They are alert, watchful, smart, and pack a ton of courage. With an Australian Cattle Dog, you have a canine friend that truly has your back through thick and thin.

Honorable Mention 1: New Guinea Singing Dog – About 18 Years

The New Guinea Singing Dog is one of the oldest and most primitive dog breeds on Earth. While these dogs hail from New Guinea, they are most closely related to Australian Dingoes. They are not a very common breed compared to others, but there are still some breeders and New Guinea Singing Dog enthusiasts who take in these dogs as their own.

Instagram/savannahsjourney

These cute pups are known for their very unique vocalization, where their howls sound more like a song than a bark, hence the name. Anyone who wants to take a New Guinea Singing Dog home needs to have plenty of time to play. These dogs are known to walk 10 miles in just one week.

Honorable Mention 2: Boykin Spaniel – 14-16 Years

According to the American Kennel Club, if there are three words to describe Boykin Spaniels, they would be friendly, eager, and lovable. They have also been described as “avid, eager, merry, and trainable.” But they are also known to live for a pretty long time.

Instagram/baileymae_theboykin

The telltale sign of a Boykin Spaniel is its unmistakable deep brown coat. Boykin Spaniels can make incredible retrieving dogs, and are also a loving new addition to any family. But any family that takes home a Boykin Spaniel needs to be ready to set aside a ton of time to for playtime outside. These dogs love to exercise.

Honorable Mention 3: Portuguese Podengo – 12-15 Years

They’ve been called Portuguese Warren Hounds and Portuguese Rabbit Dogs. But not only are Portuguese Podengo dogs known to be super cute, they are also one of the oldest dog breeds in the world. Oh, and at one point they were declared to be the national dogs of Portugal. And it’s no wonder why.

Instagram/cianthepod

These adorable dogs have been described as “alert, lively, and playful” as well  as “independent and intelligent.” But the downside? Portuguese Podengos are not very easy to train and their independent minds make them a bit stubborn at times. But once they get the hang of their training, these little puppies can be pretty loyal companions.

Honorable Mention 4: Chinese Crested – 13-15 Years

There is truly no mistaking a Chinese Crested dog. Their look is pretty distinct, with hair around their head, ears, and feet, while the rest of their body is pretty much naked. It seems that an owner of a Chinese Crested does not have to worry too much about shedding.

Instagram/lineolstad

This particular breed is also known to be able to basically read their owner’s mind, knowing when it is time to sit back, relax, and chill out, and when it is playtime. While they do not require too much exercise, do not underestimate their ability. Chinese Cresteds can jump a shockingly tall fence, and are known to be surprisingly agile.

Honorable Mention 5: Coton de Tulear – About 16 Years

Anyone looking for a dog that is basically part cottonball and part stuffed animal, then look no further than a Coton de Tulear. And with an average of 16 years in their lifespans, there’s plenty of time to play and cuddle.

Instagram/ashleyrthompsontexas

According to breeder information, Coton de Tulears are part of a “sweet and cuddly dog breed with clownish personalities,” and are “always ready for a good time.” These super playful pups might not need a ton of time to exercise, but that does not mean that they do not have a ton of energy. They truly try to get the most out of their lives.

Honorable Mention 6: Toy Manchester Terrier – 14-16 Years

Manchester Terriers were originally bred in Manchester, England, for the odd reason of “common man’s sports of rat killing and rabbit chasing.” Okay, then. But we are pretty sure that the Toy Manchester Terriers were bred basically to be the cutest things ever.

Instagram/machobellaett

Toy Manchester Terriers look a lot like tiny Doberman Pinschers. And while they might like to bark like they are just as intimidating as a Doberman, their bark is much stronger than their bite. In reality, they are known to be loyal companions with a ton of personality, who also love to just hang out around their favorite people, their owners.

Honorable Mention 7: Siberian Husky – 12-15 Years

Anyone who has had no experience with Siberian Huskies might mistakenly assume that these wolflike dogs would be intimidating. But that’s definitely not the case. Everyone who knows Siberian Huskies knows that they are basically just big goofballs, ready to give their owners a ton of love.

Instagram/skyhuskylove

But beyond being just goofy, Siberian Huskies are also athletic, extremely friendly, and independent. This playful breed is also known to have extremely high energy levels and exercise needs. Their pack mentality taken from their wolf relatives means that they are a bit difficult to train, so they are not often recommended for new dog owners.

Honorable Mention 8: Italian Greyhound – 12-15 Years

Italian Greyhounds were the dogs of choice for royalty in the Middle Ages. Today, they are known to be favorites of celebrities, including Kylie Jenner, who has two Italian Greyhounds named Norman and Bambi. And it is no wonder why some of the people who could have any dog in the world have chosen to take in an Italian Greyhound.

Instagram/tikatheiggy

Italian Greyhounds are low maintenance, meaning that they do not require an insane amount of exercise and are affectionate with children and strangers. They are also known to be extremely playful, but also can appreciate some good, quality couch time.

Honorable Mention 9: Bergamasco Sheepdogs – 13-15 Years

Bergamasco dogs are known to be characterized by their luscious coats. Sometimes they have shaggier coats, and other times their fur can almost look like a dreadlock-covered mop. But no matter the coat, these sheepdogs are known to be independent, sociable, and intelligent.

Instagram/bergamascosoflondon

While these sheepdogs are mostly know to be incredible herders, they are also amazing companion dogs. They love to watch over their favorite humans, which can sometimes be a problem when they meet strangers. Nonetheless, they rarely ever get aggressive with people. Generally, Bergamascos are not known to have any major health concerns, but they may develop hip and elbow dysplasia as they grow older.

Honorable Mention 10: English Springer Spaniel – Up To 14 Years

Not only are English Springer Spaniels known to be absolutely gorgeous with their floppy ears and flowing fur, but they are also known to be incredible partners and loyal companions to their owners. This particular breed is also athletic and makes the perfect buddy to take along for any hiking or camping trip.

Instagram/ludosmellgood

Since they are such an active breed, English Spring Spaniels are not particularity great for anyone who is living in an apartment. They need a lot of space to run around and play. These dogs are also known to hate being left alone, so anyone who brings this breed into their home will definitely get a lot of quality time.
