Adorable Toddler Took Over the Internet with His Food Manners

Updated

on

Two-year-old Grey is changing the world one “thank you, mama” at a time. While there has been chaos and anxiety everywhere around us, it’s important to cherish small moments that bring us joy. The Internet fell in love with this adorable mother-son duo’s eating routine and little Grey was quickly crowned as the world’s most adorable and polite toddler. His mom, Linda Meeker, first began posting TikTok videos on the greyandmama account in February 2020 as an experiment. She never imagined her son would become a viral star. In just months the TikTok channel managed to accumulate 66 million views and 3.4 million followers. After attaining such fame, Grey’s mom, justifiably dubbed herself as the CEO of “thank you, mama.”

Why is this smiling toddler so popular?

Linda and Grey have developed an important routine during feeding time. The mom prepares him a plate of food, which, as you can see from the videos, is extremely varied and quite impressive. In exchange, Grey takes the plate and thanks his mom in the sweetest way possible. In one of the TikTok clips, it’s evident that this routine has been around for quite a while. At some point, when Grey says, “Thank you, mama,” the mom waits a while before saying, “You’re welcome.” Accordinly, Grey has learned to repeat his “thank you’s” until he hears a ‘you’re welcome’ in return, before starting to eat his food.

The videos became so popular that Linda decided to create an Instagram to make sure everyone would be able to watch her adorable toddler, and brighten up their day. Another video of Grey receiving his food was praised for good parenting, as viewers noticed him wearing a Black Lives Matter shirt. Grey’s appreciation for food is definitely relatable, but it’s his mannerisms that have made him one of the most viral kids of 2020.

Parents who show and teach gratitude

Linda explained that Grey’s adorable mannerisms come from parenting. She said it’s extremely important to be consistent and repetitive to instill a norm; and also to teach the value of kindness as a part of a daily routine.

Fueling gratitude in children supports their mental health, and helps them become more empathetic. Parents can also teach gratitude by using a democratic parenting style; one that is flexible and encourages enhancing relationships, while also improving the atmosphere at home. However, authentic gratitude may be one of the trickiest things to teach to toddlers due to their intense reactions. It’s therefore important to start with small routines, just like Linda does with Grey; simply teaching good manners and appreciation for delicious food.

Science behind gratitude

Teaching gratitude to children is a complicated but rewarding process. Practicing gratitude has been scientifically proven to improve your life. Jeffrey Froh is one of the pioneers of researching and implementing gratitude among children. He introduced a gratitude curriculum for kids aged between 8 and 11. While those kids are significantly older than the adorable toddler in the viral TikTok video, they showed an increase in appreciation and positive emotions. These lessons had a long-lasting effect on their attitude toward life and others.

How to be more like Grey

When the viral videos of the adorable toddler first started circling the Internet, many expressed amazement at Grey’s heart-melting mannerisms. Practicing gratitude with your children can easily start at your dining table, just by expressing appreciation for the food you’re eating. Start by going around the table and asking your children what they’re grateful for. If you continue to make this a daily practice, your kids will soon become just as appreciative as the adorable Grey.
