Budding Artist Who Reimagines Disney Princesses As Black Women Gets Touching Response
A graphic designer is gaining notoriety after his latest creative idea. Many realize that there is a lack of representation of people of color in many industries, particularly in entertainment and media. In an attempt to challenge traditional beauty standards, he recreated some of your favorite Disney princesses as black women. The final results are outstanding!
An Artful Journey
Artist Davian Chester has had a passion for art since elementary school. He began drawing in the fifth grade and switched over to digital art in high school. The artist studied graphic design in college, but most of his illustration skills were self-taught. Now, working as an elementary school art teacher, he saw the importance of representation even more.
The lack of representation of black women in mainstream media didn’t sit well with Davian and pushed him to create a new collection. He asked himself, “What if some of the most iconic women in the world were black women? They would be bold, black and beautiful with all shades of color.” So he recreated classic Disney princesses as black women.
With hard work and determination, Davian created new looks for some of your favorite Disney princesses. He reworked the appearances of Belle, Aurora, Cinderella, Rapunzel, and others. He even recreated Tiana, Disney’s only African-American princess to date. Davian’s work has caught the attention of media outlets and other people from all over.
Making An Impact
Many people have reached out to Davian and were moved by his artwork on Instagram. That’s exactly what the artist was going for. “I want people to be able to relate to my work. I want my art to make them feel and think a little,” he said in an interview. “I want other artists to be just as inspired as I am when I see other awesome pieces.
After making a statement with his Disney princess work, Davian hopes to become more well-known with his work. In fact, he’s expanded beyond just drawings. He’s started to dive into character design and animation, and that work will, of course, include black characters. “I love to create black beauty, and we need as much as we can. I have so many ideas I want to share with the world.” With his talent, Davian’s sure to go far.
