Boyfriend Flies 3,000 Miles To Grave Of Girlfriend’s Late Father To Ask For His Blessing Before Proposing
Not too many men still ask for a father’s blessing before proposing to his girlfriend. It’s an ancient tradition, but sometimes, men choose to ask for permission before getting down on one knee. But for Matthew Russo, he had a difficult challenge before proposing to his girlfriend, Kristina Broughton. He knew he wanted to ask her mother, grandmother, and father. But there was a problem: her father was no longer living.
Knowing She Was ‘The One’
Five years into their relationship, Russo knew Broughton was “the one” for him. She was the person he wanted to spend the rest of his life with, and he was fully prepared to propose. It would be the most important question he would ever ask, and he was ready to start a life together with her.
However, before he would propose to her, Russo wanted to get permission from her family. He planned an elaborate weekend of flying 3,000 miles from San Francisco to Orlando and then to Las Vegas and finally making a stop in New York. It was a well-designed plan to ask Broughton’s family if he could marry her.
Asking For Their Blessings
Broughton had no idea Russo was traveling to visit her family. Instead, he told her he was going to New York to celebrate a friend’s birthday. That was far from the truth. Instead, Russo made a surprise visit to Broughton’s mother’s home in Orlando. He told her how much Broughton meant to him. Her mother said she didn’t have any second thoughts about Russo being the best man to marry her daughter.
She told Russo, “Her father would be so happy, too. He knows you’re good to my daughter, that you love my daughter.” Once Russo received his future mother-in-law’s blessing, he left Orlando and flew to Las Vegas, to visit Broughton’s grandmother. He didn’t want to neglect her.
Broughton’s grandmother knew, without a doubt, that Russo was meant to marry her granddaughter. She even gave him a family heirloom diamond ring, set in custom rose gold and platinum, that had been in the family for 80 years. She knew it would make their engagement more special.
Having received the blessings of his future mother-in-law and grandmother-in-law, Russo knew he couldn’t neglect a special member of Broughton’s family: her father. He traveled to Highland Mills, New York, where her father, who passed away in 2007, had been laid to rest.
Visiting Her Father
Russo visited Broughton’s father’s grave, carrying a bouquet of flowers. He knelt by the tombstone (inscribed with the words “Life is not forever… Love is”), and he delivered a speech he prepared for his future father-in-law, even if he has never met him. He said, “I wish I would’ve had the chance to actually have met you. Kristina tells me all the time about how you and I are very similar. I take pride in that, considering how highly she speaks of you.”
Russo continued, “I hope you’ll accept me and allow me to one day be your son-in-law. I promise to adopt your role as a caregiver. I promise to protect and look after your daughter for as long as I live.” Russo spoke from his heart, wanting his future father-in-law to know how much he loves Broughton.
Popping The Question
Russo filmed the weekend, especially his speech to Broughton’s father. On June 11, 2016, he asked her to accompany him to Napa Valley Winery to “celebrate another friend’s birthday.” Once there, he played the footage for her. Of course, she couldn’t hold back her tears.
Moments later, Russo kneeled on one knee, presented the family heirloom ring, and asked, “Will you marry me?” Without hesitating, Broughton happily said yes. The couple married in an intimate ceremony in September 2018. At their wedding, they knew her father was smiling and happy for the couple. After all, Russo made his daughter happy, and that’s all a father could want.
