Depending on the nature of the bad habit, it can help to have more than yourself to rely on for accountability.

The idea of shocking yourself can be scary. The Pavlok website uses the less intimidating word zap instead of shock. Each zap is 340 volts worth of electricity. Certainly, consult your doctor before using this device if you have any health problems that could make using it dangerous. For the average, healthy adult, this type of shock should not be dangerous.

The Science Behind It
Pavlok works because it uses a type of behavior therapy called aversive conditioning. Rather than rewarding good behavior, aversive conditioning punishes bad behavior. When a user thinks of or does something associated with the habit they want to break, they will be shocked by the bracelet. Suppose you want to stop eating watching a certain show. If you get shocked every time you watch the show, your brain will form a mental connection between that show and the pain of electric shock. Although the show used to be something desirable, your brain will start to view it negatively. Eventually, you will not want to watch the show, and the very thought of the show will bring up negative feelings without being shocked.
