Brain Games Will Help You Think Like Einstein…Right?

Updated

on

Tell the truth. How many of the brain games that you’ve seen on the internet have you tried? Some dress themselves up as battles of wits to break up the boredom, while others offer themselves as intelligence tests. They swing from frustrating to extremely frustrating, though you can rack up some serious bragging rights if you nail them.

Can ‘Brain Games’ Do Any Good?

One article called How to Boost Your Intelligence With Intelligence Games introduces itself like this: “Become as intelligent as Albert Einstein by playing the right intelligence games. Find out which game is right for you.” That’s a mighty big claim. Biographies and history must have left that part out of the story of Einstein’s intellectual development but, hey, we’re game for anything that can boost our IQ to Einstein’s inestimable level. Having said that, Alzheimer’s experts have said this:

If you’re interested in preventing Alzheimer’s by keeping the neural connections in your brain strong, then games that challenge your working memory and mental agility can be an important part of your plan.

They tout the potential benefits of brain-training games you’ve seen online produced by Lumosity, Dakim, Clevermind, Fit Brains Trainer, Brain Fitness, Brain Trainer, Brain Metrix and Eidetic, among others. These game producers are a cut above some of the social media games that may be designed as nefarious online data scrapers. Considering an American develops Alzheimer’s every 66 seconds, any game that helps us boost our attention span, focus our concentration, amp up our problem-solving abilities and promote our memory may be worthwhile.

Plus, they all have the advantage of being an occasional distraction. With so much noise online and all around us, a few minutes playing a game that might boost our brain power and might even buy us some bragging rights over a friend or family member can’t be all bad.

There’s Nothing But Time, Right?

One classic of the online brain game genre is Odd One Out. Some healthcare manufacturers and researchers use games like Odd One Out to assess patients’ cognitive function. One producer of those types of tests is Cambridge Brain Sciences. Here’s what they say about that game in particular:

Odd One Out assesses deductive reasoning, which is the core cognitive ability to apply rules to information in order to arrive at a logical conclusion. Odd One Out requires reasoning about the features of several shapes to deduce the one shape that does not fit in with the rest.

On the range of possibilities, then, playing brain games like Odd One Out might waste your time, assess your deductive reasoning or boost your brain to Einstein-levels.

One Version of an Odd One Out Game

Here’s a few steps from an Odd Man Out game from Youtube. It’s not a healthcare-based version of the game but, as we’ve seen, playing can’t hurt. This version of Odd One Out includes 10 levels that get harder and harder as you progress. Here are four of the levels and — Spoiler Alert! — their solutions. Study up! When you’re ready, show it to your friends and family (while pretending you haven’t studied the screen grabs in advance). You’ll find the full video of the game below.
