Your wedding day should be the most magical, happiest day of your life. Couples declare their love for each other in front of their family and friends. But what happens if a special family member isn’t able to attend the ceremony? That’s what happened to bride-to-be Tara Foley, whose 102-year-old grandmother was put in hospice care a few months before her wedding. Foley knew her beloved grandmother couldn’t attend her wedding, so she decided to bring the wedding to her. Well, at least a small part of the wedding.
Her Grandmother’s Wish
When Foley’s grandmother was placed in hospice care, her nurse asked her what her goals were. She only had one goal: to attend her granddaughter’s wedding. Unfortunately, due to her poor health, she wasn’t able to fly anymore. But she still wanted to be a part of her granddaughter’s big day. So, Foley decided to grant her grandma’s wish. She visited her grandma, tried on her wedding dress, and had a special photoshoot—just the two of them. It was a moment neither of them would ever forget.
“The dress was unaltered and didn’t fit yet, but none of that mattered,” Foley shared in a viral post. “I may have lied to my entire family about where I was that weekend, and I didn’t tell my friends so I could surprise everyone with these photos. Words cannot explain how much these moments mean to me and I will cherish these memories for the rest of my life.” And, according to Foley, her grandmother never looked happier.
Foley added, “Her smile and her laugh are forever etched in my mind and the love between us will live in my heart. This was one of the greatest days of my life.” We’re sure it was one of the greatest days of her grandmother’s life, as well.
One Final Goodbye
The weekend was a special time for the duo, who both knew this could be the last time they would ever see each other. Foley reflected, “She grabbed my cheeks with her hands, looked me straight in the eye and said, ‘I love you very much.’” Unfortunately, 27 days later, her grandmother passed away. Foley is so fortunate she took the time to celebrate her upcoming wedding with her grandmother, who would have wanted to be there.
Foley shared, “I am so blessed to have this be my last memory with her. She was beyond an amazing woman! I love you, Nana, always and forever!” But even though her grandmother couldn’t attend her wedding, Foley brought a piece of her grandmother to her special day.
A Big Surprise
While Foley couldn’t share her wedding day with her grandmother, the blushing bride surprised her family with a framed picture from the photoshoot, captured by her wedding photographer, Misty McLendon. Because her family didn’t know she visited her grandmother that weekend, everyone was shocked to see the photos of Foley in her wedding dress, standing beside her grandma.
“It’s truly a special thing to be able to be a part of people’s biggest and more precious moments,” McLendon shared in her own Facebook post. “Tara was the stunning bride and the love for her grandmother was something I could truly relate to! Hug your grandmothers!”
Yes, hug your grandmothers—because you never know how long they will be with us. As for Foley’s family, they were moved to tears by the sweet gesture when Foley presented them with the framed picture. The photo looks like her grandmother was there at the wedding, and no one will ever know the difference. Foley will always have these memories. She can look at the picture one day and only smile, knowing her grandmother was happy for her about her special day.
