We see them on screen or in front of the camera and on social media, and we think we know them. But celebrity appearances are carefully curated. Only a select few are given the chance to see what they’re truly like in real life — and the discoveries can be disappointing. Here’s the scoop on celebrities who are said to be total jerks in real life, and why.
1. Ariana Grande Licked Donuts In A Shop And Left
Singer Ariana Grande apparently wasn’t exaggerating when she sang “Don’t Call Me Angel” alongside Miley Cyrus and Lana Del Rey. In fact, according to a number of sources, Ariana Grande is far from an angel. Not only do her employees call her a diva for requesting that people such as her bodyguards and tour managers carry her around everywhere, but she also has a reputation of being snobby and rude.
In July of 2015, Grande was caught on tape when she went to a local donut shop in California, licked a few pastries on the counter, said she hated Americans and America, and then proceeded to walk out without buying anything. Unsurprisingly, she faced some intense backlash after the incident.
2. Pierce Brosnan Shoved James Corden And His Wife
According to English comedian James Corden, Pierce Brosnan is one of the rudest celebrities he has ever met. He revealed this on his show, The Late Late Show with James Corden in 2017, during a game he played with Khloé Kardashian called “Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts.”
When Corden was forced to decide between drinking bird saliva or naming a celebrity who was rude to him, he obviously chose the latter. His story goes that he and his wife were at a U2 concert when Brosnan shoved them out of the way in the crowd without an apology, let alone even a glance.
3. Mariah Carey Continuously Shades Jennifer Lopez
Apparently it’s Mariah Carey’s world and we’re all just living in it — or at least that’s what all those who know her say. And in 2016, she even had her own reality show to prove it, Mariah’s World. Never one to shy away from her diva label, the singer has done a number of eyebrow-raising things throughout her career.
According to Insider, during an interview in the early 2000s, Carey was asked about her opinion on Jennifer Lopez, to which she responded, “I don’t know her.” She gave the same answer to the question a number of times throughout the years, despite Lopez telling Wendy Williams in 2016 that they had met “many times.”
4. Tobey Maguire Told A Waitress To Bark Like A Seal
As it turns out, the man who plays everyone’s favorite, lovable, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, Tobey Maguire isn’t anything like his on-screen counterpart. The actor made headlines in the summer of 2014 when A-list poker hostess Molly Bloom wrote a memoir. In it, she outed Maguire for his abhorrent behavior at the table.
In addition to describing Maguire as the “worst tipper” and the “worst loser,” Bloom told a story about how he once ordered her to “bark like a seal who wants a fish” in exchange for a thousand-dollar chip. When she politely declined and tried to laugh it off, Maguire apparently held the piece over her head and said, “I’m not kidding. What’s wrong? You’re too rich now? You won’t bark for a thousand dollars?…BARK!”
5. Charlize Theron Takes People’s SoulCycle Seats
South Africa-born and raised actress, Charlize Theron traded in rural farm life near Johannesburg for Hollywood while she was just a teenager. And from what insiders say about her, it doesn’t look like she’s here to make friends. In 2014, actress Tia Mowry told InTouch about the time she approached the Monster star at a SoulCycle spin class.
After saying a simple “Hi,” Mowry claims Theron “rolled her eyes and said, ‘Oh my God.'” InTouch decided to investigate the matter further. They discovered that Theron “always arrives late to class with a scowl on her face.” Not only that, but sources told them the actress takes it once step further. She asks those already settled at their bikes to get up and switch, which obviously causes a huge disturbance for the rest of the class.

6. Tom Cruise Bashed Brooke Shields
It’s not only his work in critically acclaimed movies that has landed Tom Cruise in the news. Over the years, the actor has also fallen victim to the harsh criticism of others. This comes thanks to his alleged Scientology-related outbursts, overly-controlling demeanor, and heated rants about other celebrities.
In 2005, Cruise came under fire after calling fellow actress Brooke Shields “irresponsible” for taking prescription medication intended to help with her debilitating postpartum depression. He even suggested during his fiery Today show tirade that it was because of the medication that Shield’s career hadn’t gone anywhere in recent years. Unsurprisingly, Cruise’s remarks deeply upset his female fans.
7. Julia Roberts’ Special Nickname From the Set of Hook
For a good amount of her career, Academy Award-winner Julia Roberts was considered America’s Sweetheart. She catapulted to fame following her role in Pretty Woman, and continued capturing people’s hearts with her infectious smile. But her agreeable image has slowly been shattered over the years as more and more Hollywood insiders come clean about her shady and nasty behavior behind cameras.
When Steven Spielberg directed the 1991 Peter Pan adaptation Hook, he cast Roberts as Tinkerbell. He wrote in his book Steven Spielberg: A Biography that the actress would lock herself in her trailer for hours on end. Then, she’d show up “ludicrously late” to set, and never apologized. She behaved so badly that crew members allegedly even nicknamed her “Tinkerhell.”
8. Spike Lee Stormed Out Of The 2019 Oscars Ceremony
His films aside, director Spike Lee hasn’t necessarily gotten the greatest publicity over the years. Threads on Reddit are full of stories from disgruntled fans who say he visited their college to give a speech, but that it wound up being half-hearted and uninsightful. One fan from a small Southern university went so far as to say Lee insulted the audience, calling them “rednecks” and “racists.” Another said he cut his speech short by 40 minutes and was rude and cold to those who asked questions.
Oh, and let’s not forget Lee’s 2019 Oscars stint, when he stormed out of the ceremony in a huff after BlacKkKlansman failed to win the award for Best Picture. Though Lee had already won the award for Best Director for the same film, AP reporter Andrew Dalton said the director stood up in the middle of the speeches and angrily waved his arms while trying to exit the theater.
9. Jonah Hill Is A Grumpy Interviewee
While he regularly plays the role of the funny guy on screen, Jonah Hill is said to completely lack a sense of humor in his interviews. In a 2013 interview with Rolling Stones, the interviewer jokingly referred to Hill as Seth, to which he deadpan responded, “No, I’m Jonah. That’s a great way to start.” The actor was infamously bad-tempered and proceeded to call the interviewer’s questions “dumb” and “of little relevance.”
Three years later, Hill sat down with Ornella Fleury, who started her interview with jokes relating to his then-latest film, This is the End. Fleury’s jokes didn’t land with the actor. Instead of playing along though, Hill shot her down, saying: “I’m glad I came on this show to get ridiculed by your local weather girl.” Harsh!
10. Rihanna Hit A Fan Over The Head With Her Microphone
Pop star icon Rihanna has had her fair share of slip-ups over the years. At her 2013 concert in Birmingham, England, the singer was performing “We Found Love” when a fan reached for her hand. Rihanna promptly smacked her over the head with her microphone. The whole thing was caught on tape, and instead of apologizing afterwards, Rihanna called the concertgoer the B-word. She clarified that her microphone bop was intentional.
One year later, Rihanna made headlines once again. This time, it was for mocking a 16-year-old girl over her prom dress that was designed to pay tribute to the singer. The Hollywood icon posted a photo of herself wearing the get-up, captioned “IG,” alongside a photo of super-fan Alexis Carter in the same outfit with a caption that read “Real Life.”

11. Mel Gibson Burst Into An Angry Tirade Against Jews
Mel Gibson was once Hollywood’s biggest icon. He’d made a name for himself through both acting and directing, but over the years he’s tarnished his reputation by insulting large groups of people. When most fans point to his record of hurling vile insults towards others, they recall his 2006 DUI in Malibu, during which he burst into an angry tirade and told the arresting officer that Jews caused “all the wars in the world.”
During this same anti-Semitic tirade, TMZ reported that the Oscar Award-winner called a female cop “sugar [breasts].” Unfortunately, that’s not the end of Gibson’s misogynistic remarks. He also said in a 1995 interview with Playboy that he doesn’t like feminists, and that men and women aren’t equal.
12. Jennifer Lopez Refuses To Talk To Service Industry Workers
Singer, actress, and electrifying entertainer Jennifer Lopez is undoubtedly one of Hollywood’s biggest names. And although she affirmed in her 2002 hit song that despite having a lot now she will always be “Jenny from the block,” her behavior in real life suggests otherwise.
According to Star magazine, someone close to Lopez revealed that she refuses to talk to service industry workers. A United Airlines flight attendant attested to this, telling the same magazine that when he asked Lopez what she wanted to drink during a flight, the star ignored his presence, turned her head away, and told her personal assistant, “Please tell him I’d like a Diet Coke and lime.”
13. Charlie Sheen Had Some Choice Words For His Manager
Charlie Sheen was once the highest-paid actor on TV, but all that changed thanks to a slew of very public outbursts. The Two and a Half Men actor was fired from the series in 2011. This came after he’d called producer Chuce Lorre a “turd” and a “contaminated little maggot,” and wishing him “nothing but pain.”
Sheen’s rants also extended towards network CBS, who he said should apologize “while licking my feet,” and towards Ashton Kutcher, who replaced him on the series. Garnering even more negative attention for himself, the actor has also publicly called Rihanna the B-word, and has ranked his female co-stars, according to Perez Hilton.
14. Katie Couric Bullied Her Coworkers
As one of the best-known personalities in the TV news business, Katie Couric has a long history of impressive success as a broadcast journalist. But while she exceeds in her professional career, she apparently is said to lack manners and kindness in her social life.
Veteran journalist Sheila Weller exposed what she characterized as Couric’s judgmental and malicious nature in her book The News Sorority. Weller said Couric terrorized former Today show news anchor Ann Curry by criticizing her clothing right before going on air in a bid to throw her off balance. What’s more, Couric’s bullying ways led her to cruelly insult her coworkers, so much so that an NBC producer said no one wanted Couric to come back.
15. Ben Stiller Was Nicknamed “Little Focker” For His Outbursts
The actor who played the moronic but iconic supermodel in Zoolander, the neurotic nerd in the Meet the Parents series, and the unlucky suitor who famously gets his private parts stuck in his zipper in There’s Something About Mary is said to be unnervingly different in real life. Not only do those who have met him say he doesn’t have a single funny bone in his body, but they claim he’s egotistical and unreasonable.
According to The National Enquirer in 2010, Stiller earned himself the nickname “little focker” on the set of the Meet the Fockers sequel. The cast and crew noted that he “wasn’t happy unless he was waited on hand and foot.” They claimed he’d threw temper tantrums over little things. He even “screamed at the top of his lungs” that an assistant director be fired after making a minor mistake, and he refused to go back on set until she was gone.
NEXT: It turns out America’s favorite funny person has more barbs than you’d think.
16. Reese Witherspoon Tried To Escape Arrest Because Of Her Name
Oscar-winning actress Reese Witherspoon’s words went viral after she and her husband were arrested in 2013. She infamously told a traffic cop, “Do you know my name? You’re about to find out who I am. You’re about to be on national news.”
And that’s but one example of the Sweet Home Alabama star’s apparent arrogance. According to Star Magazine, those who work closely with Witherspoon claim she isn’t the down-to-earth woman she portrays herself as being. She apparently never takes off her sunglasses to prevent her staff from making eye contact with her. Those who work for her are said to be so “terrified of rubbing her the wrong way” that they “bend over backwards” just to please her every need.
17. Guy Fieri Refused To Go To A Restaurant Run By Two Gay Men
Celebrity chef Guy Fieri has cooked up some serious drama during his time on the Food Network hit show Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. According to the series’ producer David Page, Fieri is no stranger to using appalling word choices to alienate entire groups of people.
Early in the show’s run, Page claimed to have received a phone call from Fieri who had just stormed out of a restaurant in a huff. The reason? He decided that the two men running the restaurant were partners. What’s more, he instructed Page that from there on out, the television producer was not to send him to “talk to gay people without a warning,” adding “those people weird me out!”
18. Jennifer Aniston Made Jay Mohr Cry
On his Mohr Stories podcast, actor Jay Mohr shared a pretty heartbreaking story about working with Jennifer Aniston on the set of the 1997 rom-com, Picture Perfect. He described how unhappy she was to learn that he’d be playing her on-screen love interest. Mohr told Elle in 2010 that Aniston’s behavior led him to frequently visit his mom’s house for a good cry.
According to Mohr, Aniston pointed directly at him on the first day of rehearsals and screamed right in his face, “You’ve got to be kidding me!…Six guys they screen-test! SIX…The one…guy I hate, that’s the guy they hire. HIM!” Aniston apparently never stopped bad-mouthing her costar. Ouch!
19. Gordon Ramsay Screams At People In Real Life, Too
Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay is known for his plate-flipping, bomb-dropping, and hair-pulling ways on the reality series, Hell’s Kitchen. And while his character on screen is rather volatile to say the least, people who know him personally have said he isn’t much different in real life.
Tash Pericic, the former assistant manager at Ramsay’s London-based restaurant Maze, told Insider that she once overheard the chef swearing at his assistant over the phone about chairs that had been ordered for a Christmas Eve dinner. “What the…do you call these chairs!?” Pericic said Ramsay screamed. “They’re so terrible I wouldn’t throw them on a…bonfire!”
20. Ellen DeGeneres Almost Got A Waitress Fired Over Nail Polish
As the host of one of the most successful talk shows ever, Ellen DeGeneres ends each episode by telling her audience to “be kind to one another.” But the fan-favorite comedian doesn’t necessarily practice what she preaches. Podcast producer Kevin T. Porter brought to light a number of stories demonstrating that DeGeneres is “one of the meanest people alive.”
After posting to Twitter to ask that people share their most insane stories of DeGeneres being mean, Porter was inundated with responses from restaurant servers to the comedian’s former employees. One person responded saying that after she served DeGeneres brunch, the talk show host wrote a letter to the owner of the restaurant. The reason? She wanted to complain about the server’s chipped nail polish, almost costing the poor girl her job.
21. Gwyneth Paltrow Is Considered A Diva With Crazy Demands
Academy Award-winning actress and founder of online wellness and lifestyle company Goop, Gwyneth Paltrow truly lives the lifestyle of the rich and famous. She seems to have taken this lifestyle to an extreme, however, and has earned herself a reputation of being a demanding diva.
According to The Irish Times, Paltrow visited a Michelin-starred restaurant in London, where she quickly skimmed the menu then loudly announced, “I can’t eat this [stuff]. Let’s just go up to my suite and order room service.” And if that’s not enough, Life & Style claims the actress demands that someone clean and dry the shower at her gym before she enters, as she can’t touch “somebody else’s shower water.”
22. Johnny Depp Destroyed A Hotel Room And Blamed An Armadillo
Those who have worked alongside Johnny Depp describe him in the same way they would a typical day out at sea for Captain Jack Sparrow: volatile, reckless, and turbulent. According to The Guardian, the actor’s bodyguards have launched a number of lawsuits against him. These are over unpaid wages, as well as working conditions that would only be seen in a “lifestyle of dysfunction and chaos.”
Back in 1994, the actor infamously destroyed a New York hotel room and tried blaming the damage on an armadillo. Decades later in 2018, he was sued by a locations manager on the film City of Lies for punching him in the face twice.
23. Cameron Diaz Lectures Her Fans
Cameron Diaz has won over the affection of fans everywhere thanks to her roles in films such as Charlie’s Angels, The Holiday, and Bad Teacher, but unfortunately, those who have had the chance to meet her haven’t had the nicest things to say about their interaction.
Aside from just having a bad attitude in general, fans who have met Diaz warn others against asking her for an autograph. The editor and publisher of Autograph Collector magazine, Steve Cyrkin, even ranks Diaz as the worst Hollywood A-lister to ask for such a thing. He says not only does she say “no,” but she then lectures fans about why asking for an autograph is dumb.
24. Mike Myers Is Considered A Nightmare To Work With
Mike Myers may come off as fun and goofy in films like Shrek and Austin Powers, but according to people who have worked with the actor, this isn’t at all representative of his personality in real life. His The Cat in the Hat co-star Amy Hill went so far as to say working with him was a “horrible, nightmarish experience.”
Not only did Myers demand one person be assigned to follow him around and feed him chocolates on set, but he made cast and crew wait hours for him each day, ignored everyone’s presence, and micromanaged all of production. Unfortunately, Hill isn’t the only coworker of Myers to shed light on such behavior. According to another insider, Myers even fired actors on Love Guru just for looking at him. Off set, he notoriously fusses over having to sign autographs.
25. Zooey Deschanel Throws Tantrums On Set
New Girl star Zooey Deschanel is known for her adorkable portrayal of Jess Day in the seven-season comedy series. But she hasn’t appeared in anything since then, and people are speculating why. Some have been claiming it’s because she’s a nightmare to be around.
In 2013, a super-fan took to Reddit to describe how meeting her “hero” Deschanel turned from being a dream come true into being the “worst day of [her] life.” Not only was the actress said to act snappy and dismissive, but she was downright nasty and rude. Castmates have also pointed out that she likes to control the set and throws tantrums when schedules get disrupted.
26. Bob Dylan Was Labeled “Rude And Arrogant” By Nobel Committee
Fans of Bob Dylan praise the award-winning singer-songwriter for his talent. But those who have worked closely with him don’t have the greatest things to say about the music legend. According to insiders, not only is Dylan uncomfortable being in the spotlight, but he’s also just not a very pleasant person to be around in general.
In October of 2016, Dylan made headlines when he was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature. But those on the Nobel Committee bashed him for his attitude when accepting the award. Not only was he said to be “rude and arrogant,” but he was also said to be withdrawn and disengaged.
27. Jennifer Lawrence Says She’s “Incredibly Rude” To Fans
In a November 2017 interview for Variety magazine, The Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence sat down with comedian and fellow big screen actor Adam Sandler to talk about how she deals with being one of the biggest names in Hollywood.
Lawrence revealed that once she enters a public space, she becomes “incredibly rude” in an effort to ward off unwanted attention from fans. She said it’s her way of defending herself and added that when a fan approaches her table at a restaurant, she wags her finger and makes a face. And if a fan asks for a selfie? The actress bluntly says “no!”
28. DJ Khaled Said Women Should Praise Men, AKA “Kings”
In 2018, “I’m the One” singer DJ Khaled came under fire from fans and fellow celebrities alike when he gave intimate details about his relationship with his wife. He said many questionable things, one of which was that he believes there are “different rules for men” and women in relationships.
Unfortunately, he didn’t stop there, like many wished he had. Khaled went on to say that “a woman should praise the man – the king.” The music icon’s sexist and selfish remarks obviously were not well received by the public, but he didn’t seem to care. The DJ never gave a public apology or took back what he said.
29. Kristen Stewart Was Called An “Off-Kilter Maniac”
Twilight actress Kristen Stewart may not be known for being overly happy and smiley, but that doesn’t mean she has a poor public image. In 2018, however, she saw herself at the center of a Reddit thread about celebrity jerks.
According to one user, Stewart caused a lot of trouble while on set in New Orleans in 2017. She was allegedly “constantly getting into verbal and physical confrontations” while filming for Underwater and was said to have delayed production for the film by a month. One user even described her as being “an absolutely emotionally off-kilter maniac.” Now that’s harsh!
30. James Corden Always Uses The “Do You Know Who I Am” Line
Funny guy James Corden is the late night television host who brought us Carpool Karaoke. He has appeared in a number of TV series and major motion pictures and his charisma and witty humor have helped make him immensely popular.
But just because he’s a goofy and happy-go-lucky television personality doesn’t mean he’s also like that in real life. According to one Reddit thread, Corden is the “most entitled, arrogant d**k” a fan has ever met. The karaoke-er is allegedly keen on using the “do you know who I am” line while out and one Redditor who worked with the star even said Corden has told people he can buy them if they don’t do what he asks.
31. Amy Schumer Interrupted Another Comic’s Stand-Up Set
New York native, Amy Schumer first made a name for herself as a stand-up comedian thanks to her shockingly funny sense of humor. Her sketch show called Inside Amy Schumer ran on Comedy Central for a total of four seasons and even though she has since made the switch to the big screen, she hasn’t stopped making audiences belly laugh.
But in May of 2018, the former stand-up comedian was labeled “rude” after she interrupted another comedian’s stand-up set to rehearse some of her SNL jokes. Comic Brendan Sagalow – the person she interrupted – later said of the incident that it “was a pretty sh***y thing to do” at his first headlining set with all his friends and family.
32. Catherine Zeta Jones Said She’s “So Sorry [She’s] Rich”
Like the rest of the people on this list, Catherine Zeta Jones has come under fire from fans who call her arrogant and impolite. In June of 2018, the Welsh actress told the Daily Mirror that it’s time she stops apologizing for her red carpet looks, £200million fortune, and Academy Award-winning talent.
She said, “One thing I’m not is humble any more. I’m sick of being humble. I really am.. So sorry I’m rich, so sorry I’m married to a movie star, so sorry I’m not so bad looking.” And this isn’t the only big-headed comment Jones has made. She has also infamously said that she doesn’t think a million pounds is a lot of money.
33. Liv Tyler Made A Scene For Having To Wait In A Line
Rock and roll icon Steven Tyler’s daughter, Liv Tyler is another Hollywood A-lister who has been labeled pretentious and rude by those who have met her. One Reddit user took to the Internet to share a bad experience they had with the actress while at the Museum of Modern Art in Los Angeles, California.
The user wrote that there was about a five hour wait to get into the museum when Liv Tyler showed up and marched her way up to security to request that she be let in. The guard allegedly told her that she had to make arrangements ahead of time, even if she is VIP. The user added, “She threw a fit and argued with him about who she was.”
34. Steven Seagal Almost Got Fired From Saturday Night Live
Steven Seagal’s muscular, six-foot-five build helped him become a leading martial arts action figure in the 1980s. He was said to possess the same cinematic bravado as Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme before his name later became synonymous with “bully” and “jerk” sometime in the late 90s.
Seagal earned a bad reputation thanks to a number of outspoken and intimidating interviews he gave where he criticized people left and right. According to David Spade, he was also one of the most hated Saturday Night Live hosts and almost got fired. Tim Meadows said the actor was incredibly hard to work with and criticized the cast and writing staff constantly.
35. Kevin James Swatted A Fan’s Hand Away
Kevin James is known for his lovable roles in series like Kevin Can Wait and King of Queens. But according to those who have met the actor in real life, his on-screen persona is nothing like the person he really is.
According to Reddit users, James has zero respect for anyone who isn’t a fellow Hollywood A-lister like himself. When a fan met him at Shakeys Pizza and reached out to shake the actor’s hand, the Zookeeper star apparently swatted the fan’s hand away and turned around without saying a word. Someone who worked as security on a movie James was filming also added that once James found out he was security and wasn’t an actor in the scene, he “scoffed” and told the guard to stay “the hell away” from him.

The Mob Boss Who Inspired ‘The Godfather’ Was Actually A Lot More Dangerous In Real Life
As exhilarating as it is to watch The Godfather, there’s nothing enjoyable about the real-life characters who inspired it. Gangsters were real people, vicious and dominant — and one of their supreme leaders was once Frank Costello. He was the inspiration behind Marlon Brando’s Vito Corleone in The Godfather, but the true story behind this mob boss is far less humanizing.
