In fact, countless films and TV series have served as the catalyst for many celebrity couples, partnerships, and even lots of marriages. While some of these co-star unions have been successful, others haven’t lasted, but that doesn’t mean the stories behind the courtships aren’t as sweet as sugar. Read here to find out all the celebrity news behind how some of the most iconic actors and actresses found love after meeting on set. We bet you’ll be surprised by some of these unlikely unions.
1. Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes
When model and actress Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling, one of Hollywood’s most eligible heartthrobs, were spotted enjoying a magical rendezvous at Disneyland after co-starring in the crime drama The Place Beyond the Pines (2012), everyone started to get excited.
And, what do you know, six years later the Hollywood stars share two daughters Esmeralda Amada and Amada Lee. They still haven’t tied the knot, but who needs a wedding when they already have such a good thing going? The pair also prefer to keep their relationship private to provide their daughters with a normal upbringing.
2. Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar
Yes, sparks really do fly between Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar. This adorable couple have been married since September 1, 2002 after tying the knot in Mexico. It all started when they co-starred several years before in I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997), and the rest was history!
The pair started officially dating in 2000 and got engaged a year later, and since then have made the perfect pair both on and off screen, having starred together in Scooby-Doo (2002), Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed (2004), Happily N’ever After (2006), and Star Wars Rebels (2015-2016). Today, they live in Los Angeles with their two kids.
3. Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively
Gossip Girl star Blake Lively met her future husband Ryan Reynolds on the set of Green Lantern (2010), and by the following year, rumors started circulating about their burgeoning relationship off screen. In fact, the relationship blossomed to such a degree that the actors decided to buy a house together in Bedford, New York in 2012.
Buying a house was clearly a strategic move because Reynolds and Lively got married several months later on September 9, 2012 at Boone Hall Plantation in South Carolina. The celebrities have two daughters, James and Ines, born in 2014 and 2016 respectively.
4. Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz
When they say you should marry your best friend, they weren’t wrong. Better known as James Bond, Daniel Craig married the Academy-Award-winning actress Rachel Weisz on June 22, 2011 after dating for a year. They exchanged vows in a private New York ceremony with just four guests in attendance, including Weisz’s five year old son and Craig’s 18-year-old daughter.
Craig and Weisz have been close friends for many years and worked together in the psychological thriller film Dream House (2011). When speaking of their romance, Weisz confessed that she never thought she’d get married. According to The Daily Mail, Weisz even struggled to watch romantic comedies because of their marriage plots, but when Craig came along he changed everything for her. She also emphasized that they prefer to keep their relationship private and personal.
5. Benjamin Millepied and Natalie Portman
Natalie Portman met French ballet dancer and choreographer Benjamin Millepied in 2009 on the set of Black Swan (2010), which he choreographed. They had clearly fallen madly in love on set, as they announced their engagement and Portman’s pregnancy in December 2010.
The pair welcomed their son Aleph into the world on June 14, 2011 and wed in August 2012 in a Jewish ceremony. In fact, Millepied confirmed that he was in the process of converting to Judaism in 2014. Portman then gave birth to their daughter Amalia in 2017.
6. Robert Pattison and Kristen Stewart
Every young girl gushed at the onscreen romance between The Twilight Saga stars Robert Pattison and Kristen Stewart, and were dying to know if the co-stars were actually dating off screen with all the intense media speculation and rumors going around.
Unfortunately, it turns out that Pattison and Stewart make a better couple in a fantasy world as Edward and Bella. Stewart only confirmed her relationship with Pattison in July 2012 when things didn’t actually work out between the two. Luckily for us, fantasy lasts forever!
7. Will Smith and Jada Pinkett
Will Smith and Jada Pinkett are another one of those Hollywood couples you gotta love. The pair met on the set of Smith’s TV show The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air in 1994 when Jada auditioned for the role of Lisa Wilkes, his character’s girlfriend.
While Pinkett actually didn’t land the role because she was considered too short, the two couldn’t deny the chemistry they felt and married on December 31, 1997. They love each other so much that Pinkett told an interviewer she would give up her career in a heartbeat to salvage their marriage, if need be. The couple have two children, Jaden and Willow.
8. Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis
Former co-stars on That ’70s Show, Ashton Kutcher and Milka Kunis started dating in April 2012 and announced their engagement in February 2014. Before they even made it down the aisle, Kunis gave birth to their daughter Wyatt Isabelle that October.
After Wyatt was born, the couple finally married in July 2015, only to welcome their son Dimitri Portwood Kutcher the following year. Think these co-star lovers stories are cute? Well just wait until you see what’s to come.
9. David Arquette and Courteney Cox
Otherwise known as Monica Geller from Friends, Courteney Cox befriended David Arquette while filming the 1996 movie Scream. They hit things off so well when he played her onscreen boyfriend, that the two decided to get married for real on July 12, 1999.
When Cox and Arquette had a daughter Coco Riley in 2004, Cox appointed her Friends co-star and best friend Jennifer Aniston as Coco’s godmother. While Cox and Arquette are no longer married, they are still close friends and maintain a business relationship for their television and production company Coquette Productions, a portmanteau of their surnames, in West Hollywood, California.
10. Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams
Now they are perhaps one of the most adored onscreen couples in recent Hollywood film history! Ryan Gosling dated his co-star from The Notebook, Rachel McAdams, from 2005 to 2007, and the couple also briefly reunited in 2008 before ended things for good.
Owing to the onscreen spark between their characters Allie Hamilton and Noah Calhoun in the film (based on the book by Nicholas Sparks), the movie is listed on several of the Most Romantic Movies lists, while the Los Angeles Times included one of the scenes from the movie in the 50 Classic Movie Kisses list.
11. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie
It was the set of Mr. and Mrs. Smith (2005) where Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie fell in love. Must have been all the crazy action and stunts because by January 2006, Jolie announced to People magazine that she was having Pitt’s baby.
“Brangelina” became one of Hollywood’s most glamorous couples, and by 2008, their family grew to include three adopted children Maddox, Zahara, Pax, as well as three biological children: Shiloh and twins Knox and Vivienne. Pitt and Jolie announced their engagement in 2012, after seven years together, and finally made it official on August 23, 2014 in a private ceremony with all their children present. However, the couple went their separate ways in 2016.
12. Taylor Lautner and Taylor Swift
Taylor Launter, who was part of the ensemble cast in Valentine’s Day (2010), was rumored to be dating his co-star in the film, Taylor Swift. The pair even garnered an MTV Movie Award for Best Kiss in 2010.
Their relationship didn’t last, but it seems that Swift penned the song “Back to December” about their relationship. The song features as a kind of apology for a rough night, the night Swift supposedly dumped Lautner. She talks of his “tan skin” and “sweet smile,” so fans think it’s safe to assume the song’s about Lautner.
13. Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz
A-listers Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz fell in love when they were co-stars on the set of Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008). In July 2010, the Spanish bombshell married the equally charming Spanish actor in a private ceremony at a friend’s home in the Bahamas.
The lovers had previously starred together in the 1992 film Jamón, Jamón, in which Cruz played her breakthrough role as Silvia, but the sparks didn’t fly back then. After marrying, they acted together in The Counselor (2013). The couple have two children, son Leo and daughter Luna, and prefer to keep their relationship out of the public eye. Here’s a fun fact for you: Bardem and Cruz are the only Spanish actors to win Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor and Actress respectively — quite the power couple we’d say.
14. Hugh Dancy and Claire Danes
If you’re ever in search of relationship goals, look no further than Hugh Dancy and Claire Danes. Turns out the former Shakespearean Juliet actress met her real-life Romeo while working on the movie Evening in 2007.
Despite announcing their engagement in February 2009, the pair secretly married in France in August that year (perhaps Juliet did rub off on her all those years before). Dancy and Danes have one son named Cyrus whom they live with in New York City.
15. Kit Harington and Rose Leslie
The hearts of Game of Thrones fans everywhere went aflutter on June 23, 2018 when Kit Harington married his former GoT co-star Rose Leslie. On-screen, their respective characters of Jon Snow and Ygritte were lovers and the romance seems to have continued off screen.
They began dating off and on in 2012 and stunned fans when they announced their engagement in September 2017. Their June wedding was held in Aberdeenshire, Scotland and many of their fellow Game of Thrones co-stars were in attendance.
16. Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev
Vampire Diaries fans were in a frenzy when they caught wind of the off-screen relationship between co-stars Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev, seeing that the duo also enjoyed an onscreen relationship as Elena Gilbert and Damon Salvatore.
The pair dated from 2010 to 2013, but things didn’t quite work out. In fact, Somerhalder must have a thing for vampires because he eventually began dating actress Nikki Reed, known for her role as vampire Rosalie Hale in The Twilight Saga.
17. Thomas Sadoski and Amanda Seyfried
Thomas Sadoski and Amanda Seyfriend first met in 2015 in the off-Broadway show The Way We Get By, but they only began a romantic relationship when they reunited to film the movie Last Word. They confirmed their engagement in September 2016, and wed several months later on March 12, 2017 in a secret ceremony.
Latest in the celebrity news world of Sadoski and Seyfried is that the duo welcomed their baby girl Nina into the world on March 24, 2017. It’s safe to assume that the Mamma Mia! (2008) star makes a great mother. So, which other famous co-stars tied the knot after meeting on set?
18. Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner
Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner became friends on the set of Pearl Harbor (2001) and then reunited for the film Daredevil (2003). They started dating in 2004 and wed in a private ceremony in the Turks and Caicos Islands on June 29, 2005.
The couple have three children together Violet Anne, Seraphina Rose Elizabeth, and Samuel, whom Affleck has protected from the paparazzi by calling for legislation to blur published pictures of them and maintain a certain distance from them. After an 11 year relationship, Affleck and Garner decided to go their separate ways in 2015.
19. Stuart Townsend and Charlize Theron
The South African-born actress Charlize Theron met Irish actor Stuart Townsend when they co-starred together in the film Trapped (2002). From the moment their relationship became public, fans considered them to be one of Hollywood’s most solid couples.
Theron and Townsend considered themselves married without actually getting married. Townsend told several sources that they didn’t need to get married in order to consider Theron as his wife, and that she felt the same way about him. Perhaps sealing the deal with a wedding might have done the trick because after Theron came back from a holiday in Mexico in 2010, she decided to call it quits.
20. Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone
During the production of the movie The Amazing Spider-Man (2010), Emma stone started dating her co-star Andrew Garfield, and from then on their relationship was well-documented by the media with speculations of a possible engagement.
Stone and Garfield wanted to keep their dating life private, but they did make several public appearances together which confirmed media rumors. However, in 2015, the couple were reported to have split up. Perhaps Spider-Man’s charm didn’t quite cut it for Stone anymore?
21. Rupert Friend and Keira Knightley
Seems like the undeniable passion between characters Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy rubbed off on the actors who played them, Keira Knightley and Rupert Friend. The two didn’t just pretend to fall in love while portraying their onscreen characters in Pride & Prejudice (2005).
Sadly, Friend didn’t turn out to be Knightley’s Mr. Darcy because their relationship didn’t last, despite being together from 2005 to 2010. No one really knows the reason why because the actors decided to keep things very low-key and didn’t even speak about each other in public while they were dating. The media assumes it was because of grueling work hours and commitments for the successful actors.
22. Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston
Our beloved Friends star Jennifer Aniston hit things off with her co-star from 2006 film The Break-Up, Vince Vaughn. He was her first boyfriend after her split from Brad Pitt in 2005. The plot of the film didn’t have the best outcome, but things for Aniston and Vaughn were going quite well.
Hmmm, we think the plot of the film had some kind of bad omen on them, as the pair split up in late 2006 after about a year of dating. Interested to see which other co-stars hooked up after meeting on set? Read on to find out.
23. Adam Brody and Leighton Meester
Famous for her role as Blaire Waldorf in the television series Gossip Girl, Leighton Meester met another TV series star in 2010 ― none other than The O.C. star Adam Brody. The two met on the set of The Oranges (2010) while filming in New York.
If TV series plots could converge, Blaire Waldorf would have landed up with Brody’s character Seth Cohen, seeing that Meester and Brody tied the knot on February 15, 2015. The duo welcomed their first child, daughter Arlo Day, into the world in August of that year.
24. Chad Michael Murray and Sophia Bush
Everyone remembers Chad Michael Murray starring as Lucas Scott in the drama series One Tree Hill, right? While all the ladies were gushing over him, he decided to marry his series co-star Sophia Bush in 2005, after a year of being engaged.
Bush and Murray separated after five months of marriage. Bush didn’t want to become what some people called just another “Hollywood statistic,” but she believes they were just two young and took things a little too fast for their own good. What a pity!
25. Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens
Everyone was rooting all the way for the cutest High School Musical co-stars Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens when the duo started dating in 2005. They met during the filming of the mega-popular made-for-TV musical, leaving everyone super excited about the union.
Efron and Hudgens sang and danced their way to love, but sadly for fans of the movie, the relationship didn’t last and the young couple split in 2010. Sometimes high school sweethearts just outgrow one another!
26. Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus
And what do you know ― we have another Nicholas Sparks book-turned-movie that inspired another co-star love story. Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus met on the set of The Last Song (2010), and have been dating on-again off-again ever since.
The couple got engaged in 2012, but called it off in 2013 with Hemsworth stating that he and Cyrus would always be best friends. However, in 2016, the couple appeared together one again with Cyrus brandishing an engagement ring. Cyrus confirmed the rumors on the Ellen DeGeneres show in 2018. (In case you were wondering: there are three Hemsworth brothers, and Chris is the one who plays Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.)
27. Ewan McGregor and Mary Elizabeth Winstead
One of the latest co-star lovers developments is that of Ewan McGregor and Mary Elizabeth Winstead after they met on the set of the TV series Fargo while filming the third season of the black comedy drama.
McGregor and Winstead were first spotted together looking all loved up and pretty close at a London cafe. Seems to be something about filming together that gets co-stars all gushy, right? Let’s see which other couples made celebrity news as co-star lovers.
28. Jude Law and Sienna Miller
While filming the film Alfie in 2003, Jude Law fell head over heels in love with his co-star Sienna Miller. It wasn’t before long that the relationship hit all celebrity news outlets, especially when the pair announced their engagement on Christmas day in 2004.
Law and Miller became Britain’s golden couple because of their seemingly fairy tale relationship, but the duo never got married and ended their relationship in November, 2006. Rumors sparked when the pair reportedly rekindled their love in late 2009 after starring in separate shows on Broadway. However, they split again in February 2011 ― if it doesn’t work the first time around, it probably won’t the second time.
29. Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman
Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman‘s history started when the Hollywood stars met on the set of Days of Thunder in 1989. Kidman said her jaw dropped the first time she set eyes on Cruise. They wed on Christmas eve in 1990 in Telluride, Colorado.
After two years of marriage, the iconic couple adopted daughter Isabella Jane in 1992, and then expanded their family by adopting their son Connor Anthony in 1995. Unfortunately, Kidman and Cruise’s relationship came to an end in 2001.
30. Robert Downey Jr. and Sarah Jessica Parker
Sex and the City icon Sarah Jessica Parker was romantically involved with Hollywood heavyweight actor and singer Robert Downey Jr. from 1984 until 1991 after meeting when they were just teenagers on the set of the film Firstborn (1984) as co-stars.
Despite the fact that they are no longer together, their relationship was has been immortalized by the media because they dated years before either of them were Hollywood sensations. Back then, they were just a couple of kids who were madly in love.
31. Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn
Probably one of Hollywood’s most unique and long-lasting couples, Academy-Award-winning actress Goldie Hawn met Kurt Russell while filming the 1968 movie The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band. They only became lovers after reuniting on the set of the 1983 film Swing Shift.
The pair have been together since 1983 and have a son Wyatt Russel, who is 32. Hawn’s children from her previous marriage, Oliver and Kate Hudson, consider Russell to be their father, while Hawn acts as a step mother to Russell’s first son Boston.
