Critics’ Choice Awards 2016 – The Highlights
The Critics’ Choice Awards are presented by The Broadcast Film Critics Association, which was founded in 1995 and represents more than 300 radio, television and online critics. This year was the 22nd edition of the show, that was hosted by actor and funnyman T.J. Miller. Miller picked up an award as Best Suporting Actor in a Comedy Series in last year’s ceremony.
Wonder who won big and who was snubbed? Here are the highlights of Critics’ Choice Awards of 2016:
Damien Chazelle’s ‘La La Land’ was the major winner of the 22nd Critics’ Choice Awards by receiving eight awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Production Design, Best Original Screenplay, Best Score and Best Song.
Ryan Reynolds won the Best Actor in a Comedy honor for his role in the movie ‘Deadpool’. He was nominated alongside Dwayne Johnson for ‘Central Intelligence’, Ryan Gosling for the ‘Nice Guys’, Viggo Mortensen for ‘Captain Fantastic’ and Hugh Grant for ‘Florence Foster Jenkins’.
Natalie Portman won the Best Actress prize for her starring role in Pablo Larraín’s biopic of Jackie Onassis, ‘Jackie’. Portman gave a heart-felt speech where she praised her fellow nominees and the movie director, stating that it felt crazy to be rewarded because of a rewarding experience per se.
Donald Glover won Best Actor in a Comedy Series for his role in ‘Atlanta’, his own comedy-drama television series . On his speech, Glover affirmed that he wasn’t really expecting to get that award because he was competing for it with other great actors that he admired.
Barry Jenkins’ ‘Moonlight’ was nominated for ten awards, and received the Acting Ensemble honor. This award was accepted on the cast’s behalf by Mahershala Ali, who has the leading role on this film as a drug dealer.
Sarah Paulson won the Best Actress in a Movie made for Television or Limited series award due to her participation on a FX’s series named ‘The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story’, where she performs as the character Marcia Clark, a real life prosecuting attorney who tried to convict O.J. Simpson for the murders of Ron Goldman and Nicole Brown Simpson.
Finally, Viola Davis won the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Movie for her role in Fences, a drama film directed by Denzel Washington. This was the third time that Davis received a Critics’ Choice Award: she won the awards for Best Actress and Best Acting Ensemble in 2011 because of her role as Aibileen Clark in the movie named The Help.
