Throwback Thirsty: Little Known Facts About The Pumpkin Spice Latte On Its 15th Anniversary

It’s Fall y’all, and you know what that means: pumpkin everything. Especially, and most importantly, at Starbucks. This year marks the 15th anniversary of everyone’s favorite Pumpkin Spice Latte, so in honor of the beverage, here are a few facts we bet you didn’t know about the PSL.

It Almost Didn’t Exist

That’s right, the iconic drink almost didn’t make it to stores because Starbucks was originally worried it was too much pumpkin.

When the team behind the creation of the Pumpkin Spiced Latte began brainstorming the flavor, they were worried that a beverage that was so strongly flavored wouldn’t be popular with coffee drinkers. Happily for us, they decided to risk it anyway.

It Was Created In A Lab

Well, sort of. The team behind the PSL met in what’s known as the “Liquid Lab”, the secure research and development location at the Starbucks headquarters in Seattle.

Armed with pumpkin pies and espresso, they wanted to create pumpkin-inspired beverage to add to the fall lineup.

It’s Not Just Straight Pumpkin

In fact, to create the unique pumpkin spice flavoring, the Starbucks beverage combines pumpkin spice sauce with cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg.

That combination of seasonal flavors is what sets the coffee drink apart. That, and the pumpkin pie topping.

It Has Its Own Hashtag

Not only does the Pumpkin Spice Latte, or the #PSL, have its own hashtag when the drink debuts in fall there are over 3,000 tweets every day dedicated to the best cozy coffee.

As Peter Dukes, director of espresso Americas for Starbucks says, “Pumpkin Spice Latte has become more than just a beverage. It has become the harbinger of the season.”  And, as it’s not officially Fall, we suggest you celebrate with your very own #PSL.
