Not all movie stars are Jackie Chan, who is widely known for performing all of his own stunts. Stunt people are essential in Hollywood these days, in fact, you won’t find many action stars that don’t have at least one. Yeah, you heard right, some actors and actresses have multiple stunt people. There are even some TV animals that have stunt doubles. But not all stunt doubles are used for daring stunts of physical prowess, some are used as body doubles or even special skills like dancing or playing the piano. Read on to learn about the amazing stunt doubles behind some of the most popular actors in Hollywood.
1. Bruce Willis
Die Hard actor Bruce Willis doesn’t just have one stunt double, he has multiple. One of them is a daredevil named Stuart Wilson and he isn’t just a stunt double. Wilson is also a stunt coordinator and a fight chothe roreographer.
“If you pull off a stunt that’s really dangerous or really technical,” he said, “and it comes out right and everybody loves it, for 20 seconds you’re somebody. And then you go back to obscurity again,” Wilson commented on his work.
2. Margot Robbie
If there’s anything more dangerous than one Harley Quinn, it’s two. Margot Robbie’s stunt double Ingrid Kleinig is world renowned for her daring stunts and physical abilities. Apart from her work on the movie Suicide Squad, she also did stunts for Mad Max: Fury Road, Ant-Man and the Wasp and Justice League.
Kleinig says that the most challenging stunt she had to perform for Suicide Squad was learning how to hold her breath underwater for five whole minutes while she was stuck headfirst through the windshield of a Lamborghini. Now that’s incredible! Be sure to look out for more amazing stunts from this talented stunt woman.
3. Gal Gadot
Yes, even Wonder Woman Gal Gadot needs a stunt double for all the daring jumps and fight scenes, especially since she was pregnant during part of the filming of the movie. Gadot’s stunt double is a woman named Alicia Vela-Bailey.
Vela-Bailey is widely known as a very diverse stuntwoman and has done work not only on the hit-movie Wonder Woman, but also box office breaking Avatar, Divergent and Lights Out. In fact, she has been in so many movies and TV shows it’s impossible to count.
4. Penelope Cruz
In the comical fashion that only Zoolander 2 could provide, Penelope Cruz’s stunt double was actually a bearded man in drag. He performed Cruz’s impressive motorcycle scenes in the comedy film. Bet you didn’t spot that in the movie! It sure fooled us.
Sadly though, the spoof film wasn’t able to ride off the success of its predecessor, Zoolander. As funny as the movie was, the critics weren’t impressed and the film received largely negative reviews. Zoolander 2 only banked a mere $56 million at the box office against a $55 million budget.
5. Emilia Clarke
The Mother of Dragons, Emilia Clarke had a body double for a six-week stint when Game of Thrones was filming in Spain. She was a model by the name of Rosie Mac. And apparently, she didn’t even audition for the part.
“That same day I posted a selfie on Twitter, and I was wearing long, blonde hair. A while later I was asked by one the agencies I am signed with to send in my body measurements, but they didn’t tell me what for.” Turned out they wanted her to double as Daenerys.
6. Uma Thurman
New Zealander Zoe Bell was the stunt woman for Uma Thurman in Kill Bill Vol. 1 and 2. In fact, Tarantino loved Bell’s work so much that he made her the star of the movie Death Proof, which perhaps not so incidentally centers on a stuntman.
“I’ve physically kicked so many men’s asses and I can totally feel proud of that. But what I’m recognizing with age is my vulnerability is a source of strength, which seems so ironic,” Bell stated. But Bell didn’t only do stunt work for Thurman.
7. Lucy Lawless
Xena couldn’t have been the warrior princess without a little help from the outside. Mainly, her stunt double Zoe Bell. That’s right, before taking on the role of badass Uma Thurman in the Kill Bill series, Bell was a warrior princess.
Zoe Bell appeared as a stuntwoman in an amazing 66 whole episodes of Xena: Warrior Princess for Lucy Lawless. Bell also appeared as an actress and stuntwoman in The Hateful Eight and starred in her own documentary about her work called Double Dare. You can bet your bottom dollar that Bell isn’t through kicking butt on the silver screen anytime soon.
8. Jennifer Garner
Shauna Duggins is stuntwoman and personal friend to Jennifer Garner. The two worked together for years on the TV series Alias and moved on to double for Garner in films such as 13 Going on 30, Elektra, Daredevil and Arther.
Duggins is a pioneer in the field of being a stuntwoman and she was the very first stuntwoman ever nominated for an Outstanding Stunt Coordination Emmy. “Years ago they dressed up the men to do stunts for women, then gradually it was, ‘OK, well, the women can fall down,’ but left the bigger stunts for the guys,” Duggins commented.
9. Megan Fox
Megan Fox’s stuntwoman, Stacey Carino, is no stranger to daredevil risky stunts. She even broke her neck and didn’t realize it until years later after undergoing an x-ray. “I know exactly when I did that, but I didn’t realize it was broken. I thought you were paralyzed when you broke your neck!”
Carino even admitted that Fox does some of her own stunts, saying that she is a real trooper and can take a lot of running and falling herself. And as far as doubling for a sex-symbol, Carino thinks it’s flattering to be compared to her but doesn’t make much of it.
10. Natalie Portman
Natalie Portman’s ballerina stunt double for the movie Black Swan, Sarah Lane, was the source of some controversy after she claimed that there had been a cover-up about Portman doing most of the dancing in the movie. The producers stood behind Portman.
Lane, on the other hand, had this to say: “Of the full body shots, I would say 5 percent are Natalie. All the other shots are me. The shots that are just her face with arms, those shots are definitely Natalie. But that doesn’t show the actual dancing.”
11. Ryan Reynolds
After a series of serious injuries, Ryan Reynolds no longer does his own stunts so he has the talented Alex Kyshkovych fill in for the tough scenes. Russian stuntman Kyshkovych has done stunts for both Deadpool 1 and Deadpool 2.
Kyshkovych doesn’t exactly look like Reynolds, but we guess that mask helps create the illusion that it’s actually Reynolds performing all those death-defying stunts. On top of all that, Kyshkovych has also done stunt work for Arrow, and numerous X-Men movies.
12. Zoe Saldana
Here, Zoe Saldana is pictured with her body double for Guardians of the Galaxy. Apparently, prosthetic faces were used to recreate the distinct color and facial markings of Saldana’s character. Soldana’s stunt double was played by stuntwoman Chloé Bruce, a professional martial artist.
In Guardians of the Galaxy, Saldana plays the role of Gamora, an orphan who is on a mission to seek redemption for the crimes of her past. “I was just excited to be asked to join by James Gunn and to also play someone green. I’ve been blue before [in Avatar],” Saldana stated.
13. Arnold Schwarzenegger
Even the biggest and toughest actors have stunt doubles, that includes the Governator Arnold Schwarzenegger, the seven-time winner of the Mr. Olympia contest. The muscular Peter Kent played the role of the Austrian-born strongman’s stunt double, taking the big blows instead of Schwarzenegger.
Peter Kent was Schwarzenegger’s stunt double for decades, appearing in films such as; The Terminator Series, Air America, Kindergarten Cop, True Lies and Jingle All the Way. After Kent finished up his stuntman career he became a stunt coordinator, which he is still doing today.
14. Karen Gillan
Here is Scottish actress Karen Gillan dressed as her character Ruby Roundhouse (or Martha, outside of the game) for the movie Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, along with two of her stunt doubles looking stunning in their not so jungle-appropriate attire.
While we’re not certain if “dance-fighting” is one of Gillan’s special skills, her stunt doubles can probably handle it quite nicely (if you don’t get that reference then go watch the movie, it’s worth it.) Gillan has also been in a number of big-budget films such as Guardians of the Galaxy and a few Avenger films.
15. Harrison Ford
Pictured here is Vic Armstrong, the stuntman who appeared as stuntman to Harrison Ford for the first three installments of the Indiana Jones series. He played the role of a stunt arranger, stunt coordinator and he also played a Nazi soldier in Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Unfortunately, Armstrong wasn’t able to return to be Ford’s double in the film Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull due to a scheduling conflict. At the time he was busy filming The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.
16. Ian McKellen
Ian McKellen had multiple body doubles and stuntmen during the filming of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. They were also varying heights so that the hobbits looked smaller than they really were. The hobbits also had dwarf sized body doubles.
Apart from Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit series, McKellen is also widely known and loved for his role in the X-Men movies. (And for those of you with OCD, one shoe is certainly not like the other in this picture)
17. Dave Bautista
It might surprise you to hear that a former WWE wrestler has his own stuntman but even Dave Bautista has just that. Bautista played the role of Drax, also known as Drax the Destroyer, in The Guardians of the Galaxy.
“I can just relate to Drax so much it’s not even funny. Just the simple things that we have in common. Simple things like the tattoos, the tragedy—because, you know, I had a bit of tragedy in my life as well. So it’s really easy for me to pull from that,” Bautista said.
18. Chandler Riggs
Even child actors have stunt doubles. Take Carl (real name Chandler Riggs) from The Walking Dead for example. His stunt double is actually a 33-year-old woman! Her small stature makes her the perfect person to duplicate Riggs’ look, even if she is a woman.
Riggs has won numerous Saturn awards for Best Performance by a Younger Actor in a Television Series, as well as a Satellite Award for Best Cast- Television Series and a Young Artist Award for Best Performance in a TV Series- Leading Young Actor.
19. Brad Pitt
Brad Pitt’s body double Phil Ball says that being Pitt is the pits. Ball even described his experience being Pitt’s body double for the movie World War Z as “bizarre, and boring.” “Just when I thought my day job couldn’t get any more bizarre, I’m made to shave my hands,” Ball tweeted.
“Bored with my Brad hair extensions though — don’t know who I am anymore!” Ball added. Seems that being a body double doesn’t always have its advantages (we bet the paycheck helps though…). Read on to find out more interesting tidbits about movie stars and their body doubles!
20. Chris Hemsworth
Chris Hemsworth’s body double Bobby Holland Hanton is no stranger to danger and injury. “I’ve also snapped my groin clean off the bone and blew my shoulder out, and during Mission Impossible I popped my rib out on set. It’s fair to say I’ve had my fair share of injuries,” Hanton lamented.
Hanton also trains like crazy to keep up with Hemsworth’s muscle tone. “When filming, I train twice a day, one-and-a-half hours in the gym daily, six days a week. When we’re shooting we may get a 40-minute window for lunch, so that’s when I need to hit the gym,” Hanton revealed.
21. Henry Cavill
Even superheroes need stuntmen. Henry Cavill’s stuntman is none other than the talented and muscular Adrian Mcgaw. Mcgaw will be playing the stuntman of Cavill during his role in Mission: Impossible- Fallout. Mcgaw has a long history of being a stuntman.
Mcgaw’s first stunt appearance was on Shortland Street as a stunt double, then he moved on to appear in a number of Power Rangers episodes. He has a long list of movies he has been in including; Justice League, Wonder Woman, Rogue One, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and more.
22. Ronda Rousey
Ronda Rousey is an Olympic judoka, MMA fighter and actress. Her stunt double is none other than the black belt master Caitlin Dechelle. Try to guess which is which, they look so similar! But don’t mess with these beauties, they can kick some serious butt.
Dechelle has appeared in movies alongside Jackie Chan, Nickelodeon’s Supah Ninjas and nine episodes of the hit-series Teen Wolf. Dechelle also appeared as stunt double for Rousey in Fast & Furious 7, a role that takes a lot of skill and guts.
23. Jennifer Lopez
Stunt doubles aren’t always what they appear to be. Sometimes they aren’t even the same gender as the person they are doubling. And such was the case for Jennifer Lopez. For her music video for Follow the Leader, she used a male body double. And boy do they look similar.
Here is a picture of the two wearing matching black jumpsuits and matching braided hair. The music video was shot in Mexico and by watching it you certainly can’t tell that a stunt double was used in any of the scenes. Now, that’s some movie magic!
24. Angelina Jolie
Janene Carleton knows all about being a stunt double. She was Angelina Jolie’s stunt double for the movie Salt. And if you think being a stunt double is all about physical strength, then you’d be wrong. Just ask Carleton. Here’s what she has to say:
“If the actress is leaner than you, then you know you have to drop some weight. When I was doubling for Angelina Jolie on Salt, I was hungry for three months! Actresses also have to drop weight for their roles, too. It’s part of the business.”
25. Michael J. Fox
In Back to the Future Michael J. Fox actually did most of his own ground skateboard stunts but he also had a team of stunt doubles to help him out with the trickier stunts. One of them was Charlie Croughwell.
Croughwell (standing right of Fox) bears a close resemblance to Fox, although he is slightly shorter. The two became good friends on the set of the movie and Croughwell ended up being Fox’s stunt double in a number of his other movies.
26. Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson
Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s stunt double, Tanoai Reed, has a strong family resemblance, which makes sense considering that he is cousins with Johnson. In fact, Reed has been The Rock’s stunt double ever since the movie The Scorpion King in 2002.
“I’ve been a stunt double for him for about 16 years now. I thought after my football years I would be healing my body up, but I think it’s taking even more of a toll. I’m jumping off buildings, I’m getting hit by cars, I’m crashing stuff…I feel like I’m 83 sometimes,” Reed told reporters.
27. Chris Pratt
Here is a picture of actor Chris Pratt and his stuntman, the amazing Tony McFarr, on the set of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. McFarr started his career as being a stunt double back in 2011 with the TV series Bones.
Tony McFarr has been Chris Pratt’s stuntman ever since the 2015 flick Jurassic World. Other films the two teamed up on include Passengers and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Don’t miss out the last couple actors and their stunt double look-alikes – read on!
28. Scarlett Johansson
Scarlett Johansson has one of Hollywood’s most sought-after and talented stuntwomen, Heidi Moneymaker. Moneymaker took over the big stunts for Johansson’s role as the Black Widow in the Avengers movies. She incredibly has 74 credited stunt roles to her (epic) name so far.
According to Moneymaker, her biggest fear is someone telling her she has to sit behind a desk for a living. She has also doubled for A-list actresses like Drew Barrymore, Julianne Moore, Michelle Rodrigues, and Ruby Rose, in addition to Johansson.
29. Johnny Depp
Johnny Depp reportedly isn’t big on doing his own stunts, saying that he “prefers they pull in for the close-up and leave that jumping about to the professionals.” During the filming of On Stranger Tides, Depp hurt his back, which left him limping for weeks.
One of Depp’s stunt doubles was injured during the filming of one of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. According to the director; “That was one of the scariest moments ever. Simple things in Westerns are incredibly dangerous. I have such respect for the actors and stuntmen and directors. It’s really hard to make these movies because they are very dangerous.”
30. Olivia Munn
X-Men actress Olivia Munn has come under fire for claiming that she did all of her own stunts. “Psylocke is such a powerful, lethal character,” said Munn. “It was important to me that I was able to do all of the stunts because the more believable it is, the better it is for the audience — and the only way to make it believable is for me to actually do it.”
But according to this picture, that doesn’t seem to be the case. The stunt community was silently fuming when Munn made those comments. She may have done some or lots of her own stunts but she certainly had the help of her stunt double, Julia Rekaikyna.
