Weddings are joyous occasions for the whole family. The happy couple are in love and by their marriage, two families become one union. But sometimes, it can be awkward if the bride or groom have stepparents. For the bride, her father often walks her down the aisle. But sometimes, she’s very close to her stepfather, so he can feel disappointed that he isn’t involved in this special tradition. That’s what happened for Todd Cendrosky, who watched his stepdaughter walk down the aisle with her father. But he was surprised when the wedding took an unexpected turn.
A Part Of Her Life
For 14 years, Cendrosky had always been there for his stepdaughter, Brittany Peck. He had played a significant role in her life. When he found out she was getting married to the love of her life, he couldn’t have been more thrilled for her. But throughout the stressful planning process for the September 2015 wedding, Cendrosky had a consistent thought in his mind: He wouldn’t get to walk her down the aisle. He said, “Every time we tried on tuxes or did some planning, it crossed my mind that I’d be sitting in the crowd, not walking her down the aisle.”
As the wedding date quickly approached, Cendrosky was excited but he remembered his place at the wedding. He would be sitting in the crowd with everyone else. He wouldn’t be considered “special enough” at the wedding. But then Peck’s biological father, Todd Bachman, surprised everyone with the best gift ever.
A Quick Change
During the wedding in Ohio, Bachman walked Peck down the aisle to her waiting groom. Cendrosky sat in the front row with the other guests. Everything went according to the rehearsal until Bachman stopped the procession, ran to the front row, and tapped Cendrosky’s shoulder to get his attention. He then grabbed Cendrosky’s hand and led him to Peck so both fathers could walk her down the aisle.
Cendrosky said, “He came and grabbed my hand and said: ‘You worked as hard as I have. You’ll help us walk our daughter down the aisle.’ I got weak in the knees and lost it. Nothing better in my life, the most impactful moment of my life.” Bachman made the kind gesture as a special way to thank his daughter’s stepfather.
“For me to thank him for all the years of helping raise our daughter wouldn’t be enough,” Bachman said. “There is no better way to thank somebody than to assist me walking her down the aisle.” But Cendrosky and Bachman’s relationship wasn’t always so easy.
Their Complicated Relationship
As with most relationships between parents and stepparents, it can sometimes get complicated when it comes to keeping boundaries. Cendrosky and Bachman didn’t always get along. Bachman said, “It hasn’t always been peaches and cream, by any stretch of the imagination. A lot of families can relate to our situation.”
Even though they didn’t agree about many discussions, there is one thing they both cared deeply about: Their daughter. They both loved her and Cendrosky always treated her like his own daughter. Bachman appreciated this sentiment, so he knew having him involved in the wedding was the only way to truly have a family affair. After all, he is a part of the family.
The beautiful wedding was captured by Ohio-based photography Delia D. Blackburn. The photographer shared the pictures on her Facebook page and it quickly went viral. The photo album reached 12 million views in under 30 hours and received more than one million likes. It was a wedding Blackburn will never forget.
“It was one of the most compassionate gestures toward a stepparent I’ve ever seen,” Blackburn said. “The bride was in tears and overcome with emotion.” We don’t blame Peck for being emotional. To not only have one father but two who care so deeply for you, that’s the best of both worlds.
