The ‘Purr-fect’ Job: This Florida Humane Society Branch Is Looking For Volunteer Dog Snugglers

Here’s a work assignment that will brighten your day: snuggling puppies at a local animal shelter. Believe it or not, this is actually a job description for paid employment that was released by the Human Society of Tampa Bay, Florida.

The Demands of the Job

It’s hard to believe that this is a job anyone would have to pay a wage to see completed. However, it can be tougher than you’d think to find shelter volunteers during the work week and when school is in session. It is also hard to find qualified, reliable volunteers during bad weather or at the right time when an animal is in need of comfort.

There are some situations when an animal is particularly likely to need help. Animals after surgery may be in need of some extra support. Dogs who are new to the shelter or who haven’t been adopted in a reasonable amount of time also can also use some snuggles.

The Perfect Candidate

Who could be a perfect candidate for this job? Anyone with a love of dogs, a calm nature, and some time. It is also helpful for potential employees to be free of any allergies to pet hair and have experience putting strange animals at ease. Candidates would likely have to pass a background check before employment.

After hiring, candidates would need to be ready to get down to an animal’s level and provide companionship. Simple touch and a warm presence can offer comfort that a dog just can’t get in any other way.
