Christmas is a time of good cheer for many families. It’s when Santa visits, presents are opened and big dinners are enjoyed. Sadly, it’s not like that for every child in America. That’s what Things of My Very Own Inc tries to address.
About Things Of My Very Own Inc
Things of My Very Own Inc is a charitable endeavor run by a woman named Ryan Bonice.
The objective is simple: to try and deliver the difference between what children actually need and what the foster system provides them with.
Getting The Message Across
It’s hard for Ryan and her team to explain this to people. Many believe that the foster system is generous and allows kids to thrive within it. This couldn’t be further from the truth.
To help explain this, Ryan has asked her kids to write their Christmas wishes on a tag. These tags are then examined by donors. The community will buy what is requested on the tag to fulfill the kids’ wishes. You won’t find anybody asking for an Xbox on the tags.
Ryan Knows It’s All True
Ryan knows that when kids ask for “a dad” or “new clothes so I won’t get picked on,” it’s heartfelt. That’s because when Ryan was young, she was also a foster kid.
She says that it was another kid in the system that motivated her to do good for foster kids.
“She was also 14 and came in wearing clothing that would have fit a small nine-year-old. I remember seeing her change for bed and noticed reddish-purplish welts on her skin. Her clothing had literally injured her. I made a silent promise to her that day, that when I grew up, I would do something to help children like her and me.”
Making A Difference
She says of Things of My Very Own Inc, “For many of these children, we are the spark of hope that lights up their otherwise dark world. Many individuals and businesses have already stepped up, asking for tags; and for these children, we hope it is only the beginning.”
