Everyone knows someone with the potential to become a “crazy cat lady.” The Internet has made certain of it. But what if the cat in your “crazy cat lady’s” home isn’t even a cat? That’s what happened to Eric Hertlein’s grandmother, and her story is absolutely bonkers.
Grandma Had Three Kittens
Eric’s grandmother has a reputation for taking in stray animals, so when he arrived at her home for a visit, he wasn’t surprised to see a few baskets out with cats sleeping in them.
But then he took a closer look at one of the baskets and what he saw in there definitely wasn’t a cat.
Grandmom Insisted It Was A Cat
Grandmom argued with Eric. She said that it absolutely was a cat and in fact, she had given him a name “Tete” and that was that.
Eric investigated a little further, however, and revealed to his grandmother that her house guest definitely was not a kitten, even if he did have a name.
He Was An Opossum!
The opossum is a marsupial and categorically not a kitten. They are normally both solitary and nomadic. If you scare them, they “play possum” which is to say they pretend to be dead and even mimic the stench of a dead animal to make the illusion more convincing.
Yet, her reaction when Eric broke the news wasn’t one of displeasure. In fact, what she said will warm even the coldest of hearts: “Well, he hasn’t bothered me yet, so I’m OK with him being here!” So Tete remains in Eric’s grandmother’s house and while nobody thinks he’s a kitten anymore, he’s still a very welcome house guest. Eric says, “She loves animals and taking care of them whenever she can. It kind of just motivates you to do better and treat other beings better too.” We couldn’t agree more.
